yeah it def seems that the 970's are actually blowing away more expensive AMD chips. Pretty crazy. It's also kind of nuts that the 970's are flying off shelves. I didn't even realize but you really can't find them anyway.
AMD was smart to lower prices on the R9 290 and 290X, but I feel like it wasn't enough. The 290X's are still hovering in the $400 zone, where GTX 970's are $320-$350. The 290's are down to the $300, but for another $20 you can just go w/ the 970 (if you can find one). I feel like AMD should have gone for a deeper discount.
So depending when 970's are stocked again, and depending on my spending $ situation at that time, and depending on sales/bundles/etc... I still think I'll prob keep my eye on a 970 unless there's some insane drop or bundle on a 290X.
Although now that I'm reading a bit more about the 290 vs. 290X, it sort of sounds like the 290 is damn close. So I suppose that's an option too... (?)

I mean this review, from 11 months ago basically says that the R9 290 is an improvement over the 290X. And while the GTX 970 has been raved about as 'the best' GPU for your money right now, performance-wise the 290 is damn close isn't it? (Though I suppose the 290 does consume more power).
If the 970 is the clear winner, then that's one thing. But if I'm going to end up spending more on the 970 (vs. 290) just to say I've bought the card that the reviews are raving about... then I'm not sure I should make the switch to Nvidea or not. Though I'm still leaning towards the 970. I really don't like the idea of how power-hungry the AMD chip is. And I feel like the price is so close that I should stick to my gut.
