The annoyingly not Castlevania-esque gameplay aside, I think they missed a huge point of Castlevania games; it's not really about the plot. The plot is ALWAYS "Castlevania appears, someone goes to the castle to kill Dracula, kills Dracula's minions, kills Dracula, leaves." They were trying way too hard.irixith wrote:Some executive at Konami thought it would be a grand 'ol idea to bring in the development studio responsible for the Metal Gear Solid games (has it been nominated for this thread yet....yep) for Lords of Shadow, and then the development team they were partnered with (MercurySteam) went at it alone for the sequel. Given that the people who play these games can't make head nor tails of the plot, imagine trying to pick up and continue the work left behind by Kojima's studio. It must have been a nightmare.soul_hacker wrote:Castlevania. Dear god, what happened with the Lords of Shadow games?
No, that's not actually what happened...but it still makes more sense than the plot of either series.

Times change though too and the above is not always enough to warrant a $60 purchase. Of course I'm of the opinion that games should have liquid price points and that that would help the industry greatly, but that's beside the point and I'm sure the suits would come up with a BS reason why that can't be.soul_hacker wrote:The annoyingly not Castlevania-esque gameplay aside, I think they missed a huge point of Castlevania games; it's not really about the plot. Times may change, but there are still some blockbuster-selling video games who have stories that are basically shoe-in excuses for there to be a game. Konami should take this into consideration, although Lords of Shadow somehow sold more than any other Castlevania ever, so I doubt anything will happen that those of us who actually like the Castlevania series will like any time soon.

Aren't those meant to be a separate thing though?soul_hacker wrote:Castlevania. Dear god, what happened with the Lords of Shadow games?

I like Lord of Shadows' story. It has a great magical adventure feel to it. I agree that it feels miles apart from the NES and Playstation classics, but it is good in its own right. Granted, I haven't played LoS 2,which I have heard is not so good.

I'll second Assassin's Creed -- what could have been an awesome story with Desmond turned into a terrible cop-out / cliché ending on par with Neo's fate in the Matrix.

On ASScreed: they didn't even try to give a real meaning to the modern day plot in Brotherhood and Revelations (and I think we should have seen the warning sign of killing of Veronica Mars to lessen the cast, specially the one voice actress who probably cost more to hire), and with 4 they just stopped caring.
I would have preferred it if the series had just started with the "chronicles of the assasin-templar war over the ages" and just kept going with new protagonists every 1-3 games
