The worst part is that it took 8 years for Togashi to finish that arc in the manga with all his hiatuses. Insane.
(I love how we're having this discussion in two places XD)
I definitely had fun watching it, but yeah, it was way too random, and wayyyyy too long. I like Knuckle, he's super Kuwabara-esque, but... yeah, it all seemed pretty unnecessary.

Wait... are you finally another rare person that dislikes Chimera Ants as much as I do? lol
YES. Dude, I have no idea why people love it so much. I feel like the anime itself loses its character in this unnecessary rabbit-hole of plot. No Hisoka? Kurapika? Leorio? Almost-no Phantom Troupe? Gon just sits there for half the arc? ... Then why the fuck am I watching? Honestly, I feel like HxH gets its charm from not being one of the average "My power level is higher, so I win" shonens, and they completely throw that out the window for 60 episodes. (Note that Yu Yu Hakusho is my favorite anime, so I definitely don't have a problem with "Power Level Shonen". But I think shows should be honest with themselves, and Chimera Ants was easily the least "honest" HxH arc, in my opinion.)
Basically, I've kind of thought that Chimera would have worked in YYH. As you said the series suddenly gets more focused on battles and strength, and that was always YYH's thing. It's kind of weird to think if it was maybe an idea Togashi had that didn't get put in YYH. Who knows.

But I definitely won't miss it.

I loved that anime too. way back in the almost late 90's.

Is this the US version or the JPN one?

US version is quite butchered. From what I've read and heard, its not really connected to the original japanese broadcast.

The US redubbing has very little to do with the original source product. They basically watched the episode in japanese and changed the plot to a zany original US show full of gags and nonsense.

The JPN anime was a little more serious and the US is way out there.

You can still find a few US dubbed videos on Youtube. I saw a few the other day just for fun. I'm pretty sure the Bad guy Big cheese from SPC is the same voice for Escargoon in Kirby Right back at ya.

As a child, I watched the US dubbed version. I was really young, so I thought it was amusing enough. I did hear the stories about how the team doing the English dub had no idea what they were doing.

Currently, I'm watching the Japanese version and enjoying it quite a bit. I think I had a Japanese VHS (possibly a bootleg) as a kid. Probably came from Suncoast.

Someone who has watched this: how good is mirrai nikki(future diary)? i know it's supposed to be gruesome but I only heard about it through a playlist i found of anime songs and the premise sounds interesting. Is it worth the watch either way since it is short?

Finished the first Season of Aldnoah.Zero yesterday and man am I ever POed at the cliffhanger ending :P. Had a really good fight to finish things off but the events that occurred in the aftermath left me speechless. Can't wait till season two which already has a release set for next January thankfully :).

It's pretty good overall. Violence kind of reminded me of Dead Manwonderland a bit seeing as it's one of those shows where the mood can shift dramatically at any time. One moment people might being having a casual conversation and the next someones getting brutally murdered/mutilated. The story is pretty good with a good supply of deranged characters and plot twists which keep it interesting. Took me a while to watch it though stopped half way through and came back a few months later the first time I watched it.

The violence level is a lot higher than DMW though and is much more cruel. They definitely didn't pull any punches and the show has multiple scenes in which rape, mutilation, severe child abuse, and etc. occurs. Makes even the penalty game in DMW look like a cake walk at times.

Sad thing is I know what you mean since I watched DMW...if something makes that look like a cake walk then it has to be brutal because i remember dmw being kinda brutal as it was(even though that one was way too freaking short)

Hm...the only thing I can agree with is the left field part.

I wouldn't call the new good guy characters lame (specially Morel, the guy with the smoke), though the villains other than the king and Pitou do leave a lot to be desired.

It's been Gon x Killua pretty much since the end of the hunter's exam arc, though I guess york new city arc was about Kurapika (for me it was mostly about the spiders themselves the way I saw it :P). And my favorite character is Leorio too, so I am pretty disappointed with how he's been treated (my favorite character in Dragonball was Krillin so I've been here before), but I don't feel that's a fault of the chimera ant arc, he gets the short end in the entire series (not even knowing about nen in yorknew :/)

hm....I don't know about the impact part. Gon and Killua finally started to learn how to fight properly, and in the latest arc in the manga it seems the aftermath of the chimera arc is going to play a part.

BTW if you think the characters introduced in that arc were lame, wait till you meet the zodiac lame (with the exception of 3 characters,
2 of which leave the zodiacs right away basically
and a bunch of other characters we won't get to see in the anime).

....oh yeah which reminds me: ANIME OVER.....fuuuuck. Even though I like One Piece overall more, the HxH anime was just muuuch better (probably cause it had like zero filler) so I'm going to miss it :(

EDIT

I forgot to say, the arc lasted WAAAY too long, specially the build up part. We really didn't need episodes to set up the backstory of random useless characters (like the mob boss who we NEVER saw :S)
