It seriously is totally left field, focuses way too much on lame new characters, turns into the Gon x Killua show (my favorites are Leorio and Kurapika, go figure...) and yeah. The worst part is how little impact that entire arc has on the series when it's all said and done, it truly feels like filler.
The worst part is that it took 8 years for Togashi to finish that arc in the manga with all his hiatuses. Insane.
Hm...the only thing I can agree with is the left field part.
I wouldn't call the new good guy characters lame (specially Morel, the guy with the smoke), though the villains other than the king and Pitou do leave a lot to be desired.
It's been Gon x Killua pretty much since the end of the hunter's exam arc, though I guess york new city arc was about Kurapika (for me it was mostly about the spiders themselves the way I saw it

). And my favorite character is Leorio too, so I am pretty disappointed with how he's been treated (my favorite character in Dragonball was Krillin so I've been here before), but I don't feel that's a fault of the chimera ant arc, he gets the short end in the entire series (not even knowing about nen in yorknew :/)
hm....I don't know about the impact part. Gon and Killua finally started to learn how to fight properly, and in the latest arc in the manga it seems the aftermath of the chimera arc is going to play a part.
BTW if you think the characters introduced in that arc were lame, wait till you meet the zodiac lame (with the exception of 3 characters,
and a bunch of other characters we won't get to see in the anime).
....oh yeah which reminds me: ANIME OVER.....fuuuuck. Even though I like One Piece overall more, the HxH anime was just muuuch better (probably cause it had like zero filler) so I'm going to miss it
EDIT
I forgot to say, the arc lasted WAAAY too long, specially the build up part. We really didn't need episodes to set up the backstory of random useless characters (like the mob boss who we NEVER saw :S)
