This makes all the difference:
I sold him one of those. I guess it didn't help.
I thought the device was terrible and the games were super slow with it and then I sold it and the guy who bought it from me was like "did you know some of the spring-things (my word) had broke off?" So he soldered them back on and it works like a champ.
So maybe I was too harsh on Great Ice Hockey after all
Those are the only consoles I've ever purchased and then gotten rid of. I recognize the SMS on this list is a little blasphemous, and I played it a decent amount (certainly more so than the other two).

I can confidently say I gave that entire sports library a good run-through. Reggie Jackson Baseball, Walter Payton Football, Joe Montana Football, Slap Shot are all non "great" series games that they put some effort behind.
I finally played a SMS @ the height of the Genesis era. I was impressed. I just always assumed the NES was superior back then. Had I saw Phantasy Star I would've been blown away.
For me, the SMS falls into the "my initial assumptions were wrong" category.

Good question on track ball for marble madness...
Wait until you hear the Japanese FM sound version of Phantasy Star:
