Minecraft creator Markkus "Notch" Persson instigated talks with Microsoft to sell developer Mojang, a new source has claimed, and will leave the company for good when the deal is complete.
I am afraid of what this will mean for Minecraft on PC (let alone consoles).
Also, I know Minecraft has sold 50 million copies, but what other output are they expecting from this studio?
It sold for $2.5 Billion. Microsoft claims they'll be making their investment back by June 2015. They did also say it won't affect PlayStation or Mobile versions of Minecraft.
But who knows.
The final word is Notch and several other founders of Mojang are hitting the bricks with this sale. It sounds like they're all more interested in making interesting stuff and do not like the pressure or responsibility of being "important".
His statements were somewhat novel, he said that he realized he didn't want this thing anymore when he realized he became a symbol. And it's just not something that's OK for him.
I imagine Microsoft will leave Minecraft alone for the most part until they've made a significant chunk of cash. Then they'll start meddling.
I think making sequels to Minecraft makes .... absolutely no sense. The entire game has been birthed through change and adaptation. Making another iteration inorganically would destroy that. If they want to continue to update the game, that makes sense. But a "sequel" I think is a horrible idea. Expanding the existing game, is a good idea, on the other hand. But I think a sequel would outright kill Minecraft. ESPECIALLY, because it'd be coming from Microsoft whom purchased the developer after the person whom created the original left. That's just got disaster written all over it.
It would be interesting to see new projects nurtured from Mojang. I could see those being Xbox One or PC exclusives pretty easily.
