MINECRAFT

http://www.minecraft.net

Anyone here playing this gem? I've been addicted to this the whole past week - it's an open world sandbox game that combines elements of building, resource management, roguelike & RPG gameplay. You start a game, it randomly generates a huge world and from there on you're left to survive in the wild by crafting items, digging mines to search for valuable materials and building whatever the hell your imagination can come up with. There are a ton of things to craft and mobs of monsters spawn at night to make things a little challenging.

The developer (notch) updates the game regularly every Friday with fixes and new features - there are two versions of the game; creative mode, which is a free-to-play enviroment that lets you try the building aspect of the game, and the Alpha, which is the single-player survival experience I described.

Currently the Alpha costs €9.95, but once notch adds full multiplayer support for the Survival side of things the game will go into beta and cost €14.95, and when fully completed will sell for €20.00 - purchasing the game in the Alpha entitles you to play the game for life and there are two ways to play; via the browser or via a stand-alone client.

This game's really picking up steam at the moment as even the Team Fortress developers at Valve blogged about being totally addicted and now notch is currently selling 1000 copies per day!

I bought it and it's a HUGE timesink. And that's only in the current alpha state. Multiplayer is coming out in weeks, which I can't wait for. If you have an imagination and time, this might be your downtime killer. This is a small portion of what you can do:

Planet Earth in a multiplayer server:

Binary Single-digit Display:

Minecraft Rollercoaster:

I can't get enough of this game ;_;

It's nowhere near as complex yet, but yeah, it's pretty much Dwarf Fortress with 3d Dot Game Heroes style graphics - still, Notch updates the game with new features every Friday, adding more depth to the gameplay.

Speaking of which, todays update added;

. Powered Mine Carts (they use coal)
. Chickens! (now zombies aren't the only source of feathers)
. More ambient music

I've just got this game after a few friends were raving about it. I'm absolutely addicted to it. I've made my own cave fortress so far. Currently I'm making a fucking huge phallus to sit on top of the mountain that I built my cave fortress into. By huge, I mean to the point where it will kill you instantly if you fall off the top of it. It's like 30 blocks high or something like that. Takes a couple of minutes to scale the sodding thing.

I love the crafting mechanic. Very intuitive (well, once you figure out the recipe).
