There are dozens of shmups I like. It is my favourite genre, after all.

I just find a lot of people claim they like RSG and Ikaruga not because they're good games, but because it seems to be the cool thing to do at the moment (Ikaruga in particular seems to have some sort of notoriety in the west, particularly with mainstream game journalists). There are plenty of MUCH better shooters out there with far more depth, better scoring systems, and that are just flat out more fun.

Go play something by Cave, Toaplan, Taito, Takumi or Raizing/Eighting instead. The top 2-3 shooters from each company should keep you busy with quality gaming for years.

... good to hear what you do actually like :) I'm also a big fan of games by Takumi and Raizing, and wish I could get hold of recent Cave games easier in the UK...

You're not alone there. Cave arcade-only releases don't make it to Australia. That means anything that doesn't get a console release or gets emulated we miss out on. :(

I read an interview with one of the head honchos at Cave, and he made it loud and clear that western gamers were not their concern from a business point of view. I know that makes sense financially, but it's still annoying to know the only way to play some of these games is by shelling out $2K for a arcade kid, or waiting 10 years for emulation to catch up.

I bought Ikaruga on XBLA because I wanted to support not only a niche release but such a well-done re-release. And because I had never played it before and wanted to experience it.

But I put it down after not too long because I didn't find it all that fun. Don't really regret dropping 10 bucks for it (I don't think I've ever done the whole "buy it for a cause" thing before) but I didn't like the game that much TBH.

Why would you compare these two games? One's a horizontal shooter and the other's a vertical shooter.

I agree. They both are at the top of their respective shmup genre's and I don't think one is better than the other. I'd compare R-Type Delta, or G-Darius to Einhander. And maybe DoDonpachi, or Soukygurentai to Silvergun....but it's hard to compare vert to hori accurately. They both rock...who cares which one is better.

Does it look good on a HDTV? Or like a quick port without bumped up resolution?

Silvergun could beat Einhander with one hand behind it's back (bad joke, sorry). Most people tend to prefer hori or vert pretty strongly though, so it's a hard comparison. I'm a vert man, myself, but Einhander is easily one of my favorite horis.

Quite a dramatic improvement from King's Knight to Ein. By that standard, if Square made another shooter, it would blow RSG and anything else out of the water.

I grew up with a copy of King's Knight. I didn't notice it was a square game until a couple years ago. Same goes with Rad Racer. I wish Square would go back to these kinds of games.
