I was gonna say, if people are having a hard time choosing, because of a want of a physical item, then just pick a game that is strictly DLC, like Dillon's Rolling Western, or NES Remix.

I think most of the struggle is the slap to the face removing the physical reward as the rest of these things you can buy at any point and some are far more expensive than others but may not be the best game or already owned.

That seems a bit over-dramatic don't you think? Nintendo does not owe you anything. They are offering a rewards system for you purchasing their items. Just because you don't like the rewards, does not mean Nintendo screwed you over...it is just that Nintendo offered rewards you didn't like.

By not choosing, all you are saying is, "I am not choosing," and yes, that is your prerogative. It just seems strange that someone would rather not get something for free, because they are mad it isn't coming as a disc, or a music cd, or a poster.

I never said they owed us anything, but enough years of culture there was an expectation and the amount of complaining I've seen all over the place this year over them cheaping out this way came off as such so I said slap to the face and stick to it. This isn't about me, it's about all the general consensus online about how people were used to seeing or getting something and being their first time with an award or having worked towards it again and feeling screwed. That was the point and it's valid in regard to elite platinum status.

Well, let's talk about this. You mention years of culture. To what are you referring to? Gaming Culture? Nintendo Culture? If so, what does that mean? If you want to talk about being cheap, think of it like this. Would you rather have a $5 music CD or a $5-$15 digital game? Some may say CD, some may say digital game. I do not think that the majority of Nintendo fans are concerned about physical copies. This is a retro gaming community, so the view here may be skewed towards the physicality of rewards and that is understandable, but I feel the general consumer is not concerned about it.

If we were to listen to what the internet said and take it as truth, then every hackneyed conspiracy theory is correct. The loudest is not the majority, nor is it the most reasonable.

You also mention people working towards this reward when in fact it took little effort. It took the time to purchase a game, enter a code and answer a 2 minute questionnaire.

This is just a, for fun, reward system Nintendo has for their supporters. It is not that big of a deal.

I'll add - there are more rewards for your purchases, registering and surveys than just the gold/platinum award. You're also translating those coins at around a 200 coins = $5 conversion throughout the year.

It's also fine to say that people can just pick a digital-only reward. That's exactly what I did with NES Remix. Of course, Nintendo of America then announced a nice physical package of NES Remix I and II combined onto a single disc coming out this holiday season. So now my platinum reward for being an elite Club Nintendo member is actively working against me buying a game that I would normally be excited about and making me skeptical of buying digitally in the future. Surely the timing of this announcement could have been improved? Letting fans know before giving the digital game away would've been ideal; if not possible, then at least delaying the announcement a bit would let me enjoy my prize in ignorant bliss.

The digital versus non digital Club Nintendo "entitlement" award has been argued over and over again. Really, it is getting beaten to the ground. That said, I won't waste my time with surveys if I do not see more non digital EXCLUSIVE prizes.

Nintendo will see the repercussion on how many responses are filled out next year. However, if the last few years of game retail history shows anything, I think a lot of people don't care and are content with digital download as the only Platinum/Gold prize or Club Coin purchases.

Europe doesn't even get these, we only have the option to trade stars for stuff in the stars catalogue. That's why this whole thread comes across as slightly spoiled moaning to me - 'oh no, our region exclusive free shit is digital only'

The culture I was referring to was a two part thing. One was the NOA office up until this year giving the platinum people a physical item of some sort every time so it was an expected thing among those who tried and won it or not. The other is the true spectacle of the poor offerings on the whole the US club year around gets against what the Japanese and PAL areas receive. Did the Japanese get only digital stuff this year too or just us?

Cheapness is relative and you're right, some would rather have a game, some would rather have a CD thinking of total value/usefulness of it or possible time invested. Personally I'd have loved a Wind Waker HD or the Zelda Symphony soundtrack or perhaps some trophy, plushie, something real I could enjoy on a shelf or listen to that's all, but for everyone their mileage of expectation varies.

Working towards the game isn't effortless, yes it's buying games, but look how many you have to buy in total cash output to get the little prize, it's a lot, unless you just camera phone steal up those slips from used stores. I know it's not that big of a deal, yet people want to make it out to be. I'm just saying they changed things up in a bad way taking something unique away and people are mad about it, that's it.
