Happy- my mom is spotting me some money to tide over, and a family friend who's not a big fan of my dad to begin with is offering pro bono legal help to deal with him.

He has refused to remove the hold since I turned 18, and hoarded every dividend check for himself. I actually didn't know dividend checks were a thing til I was 21. And last time I brought it up he basically bullied me into never bringing it up again.

Was the money used to take care of your expenses when you were younger than 18? Did he have the legal right to the stocks/dividends and to use that money in that way (including selling them)? If you had a legal right to them when you turned 18, why didn't you go claim them then? Why would you need him to "release a hold" if they became yours at that age? I get that it is a shitty situation, but I think you'd have to show he was deliberately keeping you in the dark or something to have legal grounds...

Its private stock, the account has him as a custodian, I tried to get him removed on my own but was basically told "you need his okay to remove his name" and he won't give that, or give me the time of day.

I don't understand this. If it was legally yours at 18, why wouldn't they have to do this?
