Why would any cyclist (for recreational riding) risk their life going on a busy road? Seriously, take the side streets! I don't mind sharing the road, just don't like it when two cyclists are pacing next to each other, one just hanging over the bike lane causing a possible accident due to oncoming traffic.

Then there are share the road (sharrows) marked out on some streets! This does not make any sense, inviting the biker or a flock of bikes to go right down the middle of the lane blocking car traffic. Sadly after a few bikers get maimed or killed this dumb idea will probably get abolished. The fix? Paint the entire shared road green! What a hazmat waste on the environment and taxpayer money. :?

As mentioned, the US has crappy Mass Transit. Is there anywhere besides New York City with its subways and huge fleet of yellow cabs? Now Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore; love the transit system. Literally only have to wait under ten minutes (lot of times under five) for the next train to arrive. Many stations are only a few blocks walking distance to whatever destination.

In San Diego we have the return of the "red car" trolley system a few of decades ago; a mixed blessing. The tracks are above ground which kills the automotive traffic at the train crossing. I hate having to wait for the trolley barrier while passengers are loading!! The trolley is required by law to blast its horns at every crossing, even though the barrier is gonging its bells. If I had a house near the tracks I would have sold long before the first barrier was installed. At one Trolley stop in East county, there is a dedicated red light for the train to wait its turn for cars to go thru the intersection!

Right now the transit sytem in the US is still in "transit". Pretty much have to drive and park or get dropped off to jump on the commuter train, which is a waste to many of the public. The train has a better impact in a congested city such as Hong Kong or New York and if a subway system.

I need a car where I live to have any semblance of an independent lifestyle. It's several miles into the nearby small town which barely employes anyone, so it has been necessary.

However, for financial reasons, I'm thinking I might end up living without one. Obviously this means living in a different location but in any city it's pretty possible. Yeah walking a couple of miles might be a pain, especially in the rain, but it's hardly a legendary feat. Biking makes it even easier and faster.
Yes, their are safety issues with bicycles but I feel like as more and more people use them, the proportion of nutzoid-types who have no knowledge of the rules of the road will shrink. It seems way too common to see people going against traffic or worse, biking directly in between both lanes of traffic... but I assume this is largely out of ignorance on their part.

Sadly, the way the world is going I feel like the expectancy that everyone who wants one will be able to have a car is going to seem like a foolish idea from the past, akin to perpetual motion devices. So being able to transition away from them before being FORCED to transition away from them is going to make things easier from those who have that ability.

I'm in the "Love my car, couldn't imagine life without it" camp. I'm not a car lover per se, it's a means to an end, I'm okay with not having the fastest/sleekest car, but I love driving.

My biggest issue with cyclists on the road is their complete disregard for their own safety. They always have the "SHARE THE ROAD!" mentality and whatnot, but when they ride on roads (as they're supposed to because they're "motor vehicles", so not supposed to go on the sidewalk by law), they flagrantly disregard red lights, stop signs, etc. I imagine the thought process is "Well, no one's coming, so I'm not going to stop"... if that's okay for a bike, why is it not okay for a car? Oh yeah, because we have rules! Not to mention their habit of riding on the wrong side of the road, turning without looking (and I don't think I've EVER seen a cyclist use hand signals above the age of about 8 when you're originally taught them), etc etc.

Basically... I want to be a good driver and not be an asshole to cyclists, but they really make it difficult.

'cause it brings up too many philosophical questions about whether the person that arrives at the other end is still actually you or just an identical clone with all the same thoughts and memories

I'd take being a clone if it meant I didn't have to deal with idiots on bicycles.

EDIT: Or idiots in cars. I hate everyone on the road equally.

And this is how you DON'T do a bike lane:

Sometimes I love the stupidity of my country

Seriously, with how big the sidewalks are in American cities, I don't see why they can't add bike lanes on the side of the street.
