Yeah, $400 is just too much for most people. Even half that is too much for some. Personally, I don't mind spending the money. I just never have that much money to blow on something that (let's face it) you don't actually need. I was able to pick one up used for a good price, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to afford one.

So to recap from some posts ago... A while back I modified my N64 for RGB using the NJM2267 amps (this method). At the time, I was using a transcoder (to get component) and just ordinary RCA cables. Now that I have the XRGB, I'm using the Nintendo SCART cable for it. The NTSC Nintendo SCART cable has 220uF caps in it. This is what the SNES needs. But the N64, with the RGB mod that I did, does not require any components in the cable.

Bright games that I've tried (Mario 64, Cruisin USA) looked fine. Dark games were noticeably dark though. Doom 64 was actually unplayable (at the start of the first level you can't see a damn thing). Adjusting the brightness on the XRGB or the TV wont fix it.

So, I got a new Nintendo SCART cable and ripped the caps out of it. I tried it out with my N64 last night and it looks perfect now. I tried out Doom 64 again and it's perfect now. I tried out Mario 64 again and now it looks even better than it did before.

So to anyone using the NJM amps for RGB in the N64, make sure there are no components in your cable. You don't need them.

I'm still not a fan of scanlines, but, they're an absolute must for the N64 in my opinion. The N64 just looks like total crap. But with scanlines on, it hides all the jagged edges perfectly. It even helps to make it look less blurry. I get used to the scanlines quickly and forget that they're there.

I've tried them on the SNES and Genesis, but I really don't like them. Is there any settings for scanlines that I can adjust? I've only able to find out how to turn them on/off, but are there any settings that I can play around with?

edit: Oh, I also got the English translation overlay sticker for the remote off eBay. It's very well made, worth every penny.

I believe in the menu, under "picture settings" (or something like that) there should be a setting called "Scanline_A" or something along those lines. You can adjust it from 0-127, which will change how dark the scanlines are.

Ah, perfect. Thanks. That's actually exactly what I was looking for. I'll have to mess around with it some more when I get home.

there are a LOT of settings in there that you can play with (not just scanline stuff), though many of them have weird names or have unclear functions. Probably because of translation stuff.

Yep, that's what I've noticed. Some of them are just turn the setting on/off or adjust the value up/down and see if you can figure out what it's doing. To bad I can't read the instruction manual that came with it.

Can any one recommend some SCART switches? There doesn't seem to be a lot of choices on USA eBay and Amazon (for obvious reasons).

Most of the cheaper ones you'll run into are absolutely *awful* and will flat out not work.

the Hama 100S seems good and fairly reasonably priced.

Here's a roundup of various switches: http://www.videogameperfection.com/2011 ... h-roundup/

hey guys need a little advice... i'm trying to use s-video on a SFC model 1 and N64, through a framemeister but it doesnt seem to output any video. possibly faulty s-video cable? there's an output if i plugin the the yellow RCA though.(should that be plugged along with the svideo??, i always thought not).. or is there some special config i should have tried on the framemeister ? i dont have a monitor that has direct input of s-video so i really need to go through the framemeister...

thanks!

You are changing the meister to S-Video input, and it says "No input"?
The button on the remote is the bottom-center of the remote's input selections.
I actually haven't tried the S-video input of mine so I can't say whether it does or does not work for me. I'm not at home so I cannot test the pile of official and 3rd party Nintendo S-video cables I have sitting in a cupboard right now.
