It's not really case of the developers "not giving a shit and playing the audience for fools." Developers pretty much never intentionally set out to make a shoddy product. In S64's case, a lot of the development issues came from the licensor, who apparently gave them a lot of trouble.
This. No dev wants to make a bad game; it's usually either incompetence or resource/rights restrictions that make a game poor. You can make a good game out of anything (provided you take a necessary amount of creative liberties in design), so incompatible source material is not a good excuse.
Yeah, but also remember hearing somewhere that the game was rushed too...it was supposed to be more developed and everything(and they even wanted to re-release it on playstation and it would've been better supposedly but the license ran out and even a few years later I think they went out of business...if not later)

^ That, seriously. The original zelda, at least for me, is impossible without the manual and maybe a over world map(I even tried it with the vc version...I get lost way too often and kinda quit for needing a break from it)

Edit: Quest for camelot, though with some quirks...isn't half bad of a game. If only I could complete it...I always seem to get busy for way too long when playing it that I have to restart it...

I don't think the developers want to make a bad game, but I feel that the video game industry is starting to be run by incompetent businessmen. Production teams and team managers that put strict schedules and really push a team in a lot of different directions... not to mention the fact that they will send a lot of work out to a third party team to do things like with Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

A lot of factors lead to a bad game, but I feel that a lot of times it deals with the incompetence of management.

Publishers run it, not developers. Which... is completely backwards if you ask me.

Starting? :P

It's been that way since the days of cocaine-fueled Atari, saved only by intermittent flashes of brilliance.

I think Chrono Cross is criminally underrated and easily is a top 5 RPG of all time

Yea when ever I've heard anyone bad mouth the game it's over the stupidest things like how it isn't a continuation of CT or how the party members are stupid and pointless/don't add anything to the story. It's like these people have never actually played Chrono Trigger. I mean Robo, Aylaya and Magus were all pointless characters that added absolutely nothing to the story.

Definitely the best looking rpg on the PS1.

I think Chrono Trigger is one of the most over rated rpgs of all time. It just isn't that good and the story is pretty bad aside from Frog's story line which I liked. It's like it's the ff 7 of the 16 bit era.

Chrono Trigger absolutely murders Chrono Cross. It isn't even a fair fight.

Square should localize and port Radical Dreamers and Seiken Densetsu 3 to the Vita and/or 3DS but I'm sure they're too busy working on Final Fantasy XV-2 or some shit.

If you want to talk 16 bit rpgs...
Lunar>Chrono Trigger.

You can make a pretty strong case for Chrono Cross over any RPG, I think it is a top 5 in the genre IMO..

Kind of how Michael Jordan is the consensus greatest of all time in basketball...but KAJ can be argued as the best (although I'm not sure Chrono Trigger is considered the best RPG..wouldn't it be FF6?)

I don't agree, at all.

My opinion: Lunar is really good. Crono Trigger is better. By a lot.

I would say Lunar, especially the vastly improved remakes on Saturn and PS1, are better than a ton of other jRPGs, though.

CT does so much so well. Lunar seems kinda of generic compared to it, and it didn't make that mold.

I do agree that Chrono Cross doesn't hold a candle to Trigger ... though it's a good game. I think it's better than most Final Fantasy games, though.
