This is indeed sad news. He did devote years to making his game. It did seem impressive from the trailer that he released a few months ago. I'm rooting for him but he should have seen it coming. Nintendo thinks it's bad for business to support indie developers and they might be right. However I think their management is largely Japan-centric. They don't have much of an indie scene in Japan AFAIK (yes they do make indie games not to mention the homebrew scene but it's not a mainstream phenomenon yet).

Yeah, I saw the story yesterday and shot an e-mail to Nintendo. I just think it's kinda mean.

He does seem a bit paranoid though. But I won't judge his person.. I hope Nintendo opens the door for indie devs, if anything their Wiiware is an ideal platform.

Nintendo are far too busy counting their money to listen to an indie dev.

No joke here. One of my buddies at work looked in to getting a dev kit for Wiiware just to mess around with, if the price was right. Turns out you need several thousand dollars and a business address in order to get a dev kit.Niode wrote:Nintendo are far too busy counting their money to listen to an indie dev.

yeah... you do need lots of money and a business address.
You know what you can do with an SDK for proprietary hardware right!? Proprietary being the key adjective there.

i don't really think it is mean- just business. Nintendo isn't just chucking dev kits out there. They like knowing where they go.equalsign wrote:Yeah, I saw the story yesterday and shot an e-mail to Nintendo. I just think it's kinda mean.
And honestly- welcome to the real world bob. If you want to release your game you can homebrew it. Or if you want to make some money sell it as a pc game. If people like it, it'll catch on and make money and then nintendo will be at your door.
or- Work for a company. Work your way up. Make a high profile game in 5-10 years if you are ambitious enough with good ideas.
btw just my opinion but- the game looks really boring. I guess its cool that he put a bunch of time and energy into it. I like that he made a bunch of characters or whatever and then worked with the ds clock... thats cute. But yeah- looks real bad.
Additionally- this kind of comes off like a temper tantrum.

Nickfil, I tend to agree with just about everything you said and I don't know if going into a job interview for a position that will require team-work and having these two items listed on your resume is a great idea:
1. Developed game for five years completely on my own
2. Locked myself in solitary confinement for 100 days.
That just screams "team player."
There is a reason games are developed by groups, even if they are relatively small.
