Yeah I agree for the most part. Although like I mentioned I am very interested in the blu tooth wireless capability. Also it looks like it has an analog stick, which I think will help with shooters (shmups), as sometimes the directional pad just didn't seem precise enough for me (I'm looking at YOU Axelay!).

The stick is a tiny microswitch arcade stick, similar to the one on the Neo Geo Pocket or the Neo Geo pads.

Or you could get a Wii, which is more powerful and has more options for emulating, and you can always buy original controller adapters if thats what your picky about.
There is better stuff to mod than this Retron 5.
The things id like the Retron 5 for, is backing up Cart based saves, and not having to change TV inputs for other consoles.
