The Mod appreciation thread
Re: The Mod appreciation thread
Moderation on a forum is easy and needs little work. Multiply that with several moderators on a site and any "hard work" claim is rediculous. I have a busy site, and administer 90% or more of the site myself, it isn't hard at all. Little work, minutes to an hour a day at the worst. In fact, the moderators on my site are pretty redundant however I keep them on more as historical appreciation as there is little for them to do in practice.
Appreciation is earnt as is respect; someone who says "look at what i've done and appreciate me" does not deserve either appreciation or respect as if their work justified that they would get them anyway; more of a cry for help really! People on the internet vote with their feet anyway.
If this site, which isn't majorly active after all and has so many moderators, moans about doing pretty little to run a site, then they are the wrong moderators for the job; if they are the right moderators for the job then they will be active and do a good job and moderate for the enjoyment of it; and will therefore inherently earn the respect of the membership by their leadership and fairness.

I remember Noise I think locking someone's post count so he could stay the only member with more than 10,000 posts.
That was great.

Re: The Mod appreciation thread
More like abusing their powers.
Moderators are there to ensure the forum is run by the rules of the site as layed out by the Administrators, fairly and properly and not to run a site to expolit it or use playground behaviour or take advantage of their position for their own means and "lols" - i've had a couple of moderators in the past who have abused their position on the site, when I notice such happening, I sack them.

Re: The Mod appreciation thread
That's one helluva assumption to make without knowing the situation. Nothing wrong with a mod having a bit of fun, especially when the member that is on the receiving end of this "abuse of power" is having just as much fun.

If something is actioned at a detriment to others or to enhance others' or themselves by using their powers that others do not have (eg moderator on a site) then they are using their powers in a way they are not designed for, and as such are an abuse of power; although of course there are many shades of grey involved. That is where the administrators decide if it is suitable behaviour or not - if fine then no issue, if not, not.
is an abuse, however you look at it.locking someone's post count so he could stay the only member with more than 10,000 posts.

You should get into politics....and that's not a compliment.bacteria wrote:If something is actioned at a detriment to others or to enhance others' or themselves by using their powers that others do not have (eg moderator on a site) then they are using their powers in a way they are not designed for, and as such are an abuse of power; although of course there are many shades of grey involved. Re: The Mod appreciation thread
you know apple was making a joke right? And if there was a way to do such a thing, I'm certainly not smart enough to know how to do it. I'm sure if something like that was possible, you'd have to be an admin, not a lowly mod.bacteria wrote:is an abuse, however you look at it.locking someone's post count so he could stay the only member with more than 10,000 posts.
And in all candor I'm probably the mod that does the least modding, which is why I've threatened to "step down" for the better part of the last year.
I do agree with a couple things you said though-
to be honest, I always thought this thread was a little silly. It does come across a bit "hey, guys, please give us compliments!"someone who says "look at what i've done and appreciate me" does not deserve either appreciation or respect
good point.if they are the right moderators for the job then they will be active and do a good job and moderate for the enjoyment of it;
