Your top 10 non-retro games of 2008

Post by Pulsar_t »

Here's mine
  • The World Ends With You
  • Chrono Trigger DS
  • Mass Effect (PC)
  • Yakuza 2
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
  • Mirror's Edge
  • Professor Layton and the Curious Village
  • The Immortals of Terra: A Perry Rhodan Adventure
  • Braid
  • Space Invaders Extreme
*non-retro=2008 commercial release. Even though Chrono Trigger and SI Extreme are retro-style they're recent releases as well with relatively fresh RRPs!

Feel free to list them however you like. I would have included MGS4 but I haven't played that one yet.

Left 4 Dead is game of the year for me. It has been a long time since I've been so excited about a FPS. We've invested a lot of time playing that game since it came out. Last night we were playing it with an overhead projector which was projecting the video on a wall...screen can become HUGE if you have enough blank wall. ;)

I tend to avoid multiplayer unless it's something truly special. Only four maps for L4D doesn't seem much though. Any plans for DLC?

LOL. I haven't spent enough time with it yet, only played through the tutorial missions, but I'm fixing to spend some quality time with it over the holidays.

Not sure about DLC but don't let the fact that there are only four "maps" (movies) get you down. Each "movie" has multiple levels in it and there are multiple routes you can take in each level.

A side from that it isn't a typical FPS game. You can play the same movie a thousand times and not get bored with it. The game is very good at mixing things up and sending zombies/smokers/boomers/tanks/witches at different places. It'll also punish you if you aren't moving through the level fast enough by sending more hordes of zombies you way.

It's a very team based game and impossible to beat without the help of the other players (even the CPU is very helpful). You spend a lot of your time saving the other players and making sure everyone has enough health to make it out alive.

Even people that aren't fans of FPS games will enjoy Left 4 Dead I think. I encourge you to give it a try....good luck finding a copy of it right now though. They only made 500,000 copies in the first production run and so far they have sold over 400,000.

BTW the game was only developed by 11 people IIRC. They were not expecting it to be as big of a hit as it is. In other words it's the sleeper hit of the season. :)

Note: Edited post to avoid confusion. See Mozgus's reply below.

No no no, I'm so sick of this. It's not just 4 maps. It's 20 maps. Learn to count. Each map is completely unique, massive, and pretty much more detailed than any other source maps ever made.
