Here is what I feel about all this retro feel. IT SUCKS!!!!!
It used to be fun collecting when the xbox/gc/ps2 generation was out. No one wanted 8-64 bit games. Everyone was ahh about graphics. Then the internet and ebay and a couple people found rare games and they sold them making thousands of dollars and people thought that they can sell their stuff for tons of money. In 2005 the nes on a chip/yobo came out and people started to remember how fun games were and they started to collect all of the classic games they once had and it hasn't slowed down since.
If you don't know also all the n64 kids are now out of school/ college and have jobs and can afford 64 games so the demand goes up.
All the 8 bit and 16 bit kids like myself have been working own homes and have kids and they want their childhood games so they go out and collect these games and have money to buy them and they know that its getting harder and harder to buy them so they keep the games and the demand is going up for those games.
Now with gamecube these are kids and people in college now and they are getting all the gc games they can while there in school.
The other thing is it's Nintendo the name brand. Everyone loves Mario and Zelda.
Its so much more to that than what I wrote we can just go on and on about this subject. This is why im calming down and even stopping on collecting. I can't afford it. I own a wii and I bought most of the classics /essentials and I only spend 30.00 a month now. I have a 3ds and is starting to get into that and between those two with eshop I can buy games and not kill my wallet anymore. I also have a 360 and I have the genesis collection so my sega fix is done.
I could buy a genesis or a snes and spend money on those games but I feel like I played those games for so many years and ive beaten those games and for me I would rather buy and play the wii version of dkc or punch out than the originals.
But overall I feel for all the collectors here it sucks. It's become a free for all fight out war to try to find a game at a thrift store or a flea market for good deals on games and all that driving everywhere to find good games for a few dollars less than what ebay sells for and when you find something you ask how much and the guy says hold on and pulls out his phone. I fucking hate that.

That's exactly the same thought I have on this. Go back to the 5th or 6th generation and while everyone's getting caught up in the amazing graphics that both these generations had, I bet all sorts of NES/SNES and other games from around that time were still dirt cheap. Then somehow that all got old and now people wanted to play some of these older games from the popular Nintendo series.

To whoever said even GC prices are going up -- I believe it. It's a nightmare trying to find a fair price for anything from Nintendo (first-party games) these days, but I understand the premium that the brand commands, and it looks like it's starting with the N64 now.

EXACTLY! The sellers don't push the prices up - the buyers do, with their demand.

Seller: "Here is a RARE video game. Now put a dent in your wallet buying it!"
Me: "Uh, no thanks. I'll pass and maybe buy a new blu-ray."

This may get me in trouble here, but growing up I loved the Genesis. I would love to have games like Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Shadowrun again. The save batteries and prices keep me from doing it, though. I have thought about those retro 30 game in one systems for the Genesis, though. Bad thing is they only have Sega made games on it, no 3rd parties.
They have escaped into the mansion where they thought it was safe, yet.

Ninjainspandex thanks but a few people suggested this to me. Here is my thing a snes would cost me 50.00 or so and to get that snes chip would be about a 100.00 or so and for me and to hear it from my wife and deal with all that it wouldn't be worth it. Besides I would get a genesis, nes and snes. That's about 300.00 alone.
I would rather buy a game here and there on vc. And right now im starting to look into the 3ds/ds games for me to purchase next month. The 3ds/ds has games and remakes like all you know look really good. I'd rather look into and spend my money on the castlevania on 3ds. I have never played it and it looks freaking awesome and its only 12.00-15.00 on ebay.

One thing I can say about high game prices is thank goodness for piracy. Can you imagine how much more these games would be if there was no other way to play them (re-releases aside)?

In any case, you can hardly blame other people wanting the same games that you do. It's kind of odd that we (including myself) were surprised or shocked by the prices we see. It was always going to end up like this.

On that note, I lament not owning Conker's Bad Fur Day... especially when I remember it being $10 brand new in several stores. Got a copy for a friend, but that was before I owned an N64 myself.

I'm glad my N64 collection cost me next to nothing to build, since I purchased it just after the Gamecube came out, when N64 stuff was practically being given away.

Not to rub it in, but I own copies of Super Smash Bros, Conker's Bad Fur Day and Banjo Tooie, complete, in their boxes and in fantastic condition and neither cost me much at all 8)

==Throws Tomato==

Actually, I'm pretty happy with my collection. Much of it was found at discount prices as well...
But there are always a few that you end up missing and can't justify paying at market prices. Conker is one such game. Not sure if I care about Banjo Tooie, as I haven't even played through the 1st one.
Smash Bros is a must IMO though. I have much enjoyed my copy.

No interesting collection is truly complete
