Re: N64 and how it holds up today
having had my N64 RGB modded & upscaled, i think it holds up fairly well but man, some AA would go a long way...game wise, it's still great for multiplayer and era-stuff like the DOOM/Quake type shooters too. the first party stuff holds up like it usually does, and finally being able to play Sin & Punishment on OG hardware is awesome too. i've been exploring some of the Rare gems i missed like Blast Corps in recent months, holy crap that company was golden back then and if nintendo would've managed to keep them nearly on that level with them they'd only half be in the rut they are now, i think.
Re: N64 and how it holds up today
I'm not speaking objectively on this; the Nintendo 64 was the first console I ever owned. I got mine in 2002, when I was six, and I have many fond memories of playing it over the past decade, since I wasn't allowed to get anything above a certain price. I didn't get anything newer until I got my Wii in 2008, and I still have my original N64 as of this posting.

I am shocked this thread made it to 8 pages before this game was mentioned. If there's a hidden gem on the N64, it's this one. Fun city.

What is funny is I just recently watched a speed run of the game being played by two guys on Awesome Games done Quick. Beat the game and found the hidden scientists in about a half an hour.

I've tried numerous times to get into this one but I just can't find my stride with it. I will definitely try again though. There are just too many people that stand behind it for me not to.
Re: N64 and how it holds up today
Of all the forums on the web this is the last one i expected to see a discussion on how bad n64 graphics can be.
Ofcourse the early 3d of that era can´t compare to later stuff the framerate is all over the place and the controls are weird. But if the game is good that stuff really does not matter.
Just take some time to adjust to the controls and bear with the framerate. If the game is not good enough to warrant that then just move on to something else on the system.

I actually don't mind the graphics at all, I think there is some charm there. You also have to appreciate what developers were able to do with the limited power of the PS1, Saturn, and N64.

On that note i was actually impressed by all the graphical effects Rare managed to use in Perfect Dark. And the art design is brilliant.

I, for one, love the early 3D style graphics on the N64. It's definitely the most unique of that generation's consoles, which is probably why it is so collectible now.

that is a part of the growing pains of 3D. You can see that for a lot of great classic titles on the Playstation and the Saturn. Things like camera were a problem for games that still to this day plague us. There are some games though from n64 that do stand the test of time and rightfully so like the Banjo Kazooie Series.
So true! When this came out I was in college for computer science. I was buying "graphics gems" books and trying to optimize 3D projection routines with assembler on my Pentium PC. What some call "charm" I call appreciation of what the developers could do with the hardware. They realized photorealistic wasn't going to happen so they went for style. Some did better than others but I really enjoy seeing how they pulled off that look.
