It's really the presentation that gives it its reputation. They make a game that is somewhat similar to Mario 64 (because peoples jimmies were rustled you had to use a water gun in Sunshine), put some violin music in the background, and put him in a whimsical setting like outer space and it gets people choked up. Automatically called one of the greatest games of all time, which is kinda crazy, I barely have it in my top ten Wii games, and there are plenty of Wii games that I haven't played that would likely go over it.pierrot wrote:Mostly agree. I finished Mario Galaxy with all stars aside from a few of the Garden galaxy stars, and it was a grueling experience from start to finish. Very little of it felt even the least bit fun to me. The power-ups are mostly crap, also: Bee Mario and Spring Mario suck. Outside of presentation, I really don't see anything remarkable about Galaxy. So, yeah; The original Sly Cooper mops the floor with Galaxy, in my opinion. The only Mario game that I feel even contends with the likes of Sly Cooper is Sunshine. I haven't played Galaxy 2, or 3D World on the 3DS at all, though. (Doubtful that they would make me feel any differently.)Violent By Design wrote:I didn't think Galaxy was that good. Galaxy 2 was better, and I thought 3D Land was better too from what I played of it (3 or 4 worlds).
I'm pretty sure Mario 64 is better than Galaxy too.
If the Sly Cooper games count, I might put them over Galaxy 1 as well.
I had a somewhat similar experience with Galaxy about half way toward beating it, I started playing it just to beat it, and didn't really have that much fun. I'm surprised you collected that many stars, I did the bare minimum to beat the game and moved on with no intent of continuing at all. The actual stage designs from a platforming/challenging point of view, are not very engaging. The camera angles are kinda messed up too, and there are a lot of times when you're pressing one direction and Mario is going the opposite because of how small a lot of the platforms were. The actual controls with Mario are good, but the levels he's in are boring if you get past the aesthetics.
Galaxy 2 is a lot more diverse in its level design (Galaxy 1 had a lot of you jumping from what tiny metal sphere to another), way more diverse in its powerups (still weaker than the 2D games, but Galaxy 1 had very bad power ups, I agree with that).
If you're ever willing to jump back, I think Galaxy 2 is worth a try. I would give Galaxy 1 maybe a 6 or a 7, Galaxy 2 would be a 9 or a 10 to me, just much better designed though same concept overall obviously.
