I'm pretty sure Mario 64 is better than Galaxy too.

If the Sly Cooper games count, I might put them over Galaxy 1 as well.
Mostly agree. I finished Mario Galaxy with all stars aside from a few of the Garden galaxy stars, and it was a grueling experience from start to finish. Very little of it felt even the least bit fun to me. The power-ups are mostly crap, also: Bee Mario and Spring Mario suck. Outside of presentation, I really don't see anything remarkable about Galaxy. So, yeah; The original Sly Cooper mops the floor with Galaxy, in my opinion. The only Mario game that I feel even contends with the likes of Sly Cooper is Sunshine. I haven't played Galaxy 2, or 3D World on the 3DS at all, though. (Doubtful that they would make me feel any differently.)
It's really the presentation that gives it its reputation. They make a game that is somewhat similar to Mario 64 (because peoples jimmies were rustled you had to use a water gun in Sunshine), put some violin music in the background, and put him in a whimsical setting like outer space and it gets people choked up. Automatically called one of the greatest games of all time, which is kinda crazy, I barely have it in my top ten Wii games, and there are plenty of Wii games that I haven't played that would likely go over it.

I had a somewhat similar experience with Galaxy about half way toward beating it, I started playing it just to beat it, and didn't really have that much fun. I'm surprised you collected that many stars, I did the bare minimum to beat the game and moved on with no intent of continuing at all. The actual stage designs from a platforming/challenging point of view, are not very engaging. The camera angles are kinda messed up too, and there are a lot of times when you're pressing one direction and Mario is going the opposite because of how small a lot of the platforms were. The actual controls with Mario are good, but the levels he's in are boring if you get past the aesthetics.

Galaxy 2 is a lot more diverse in its level design (Galaxy 1 had a lot of you jumping from what tiny metal sphere to another), way more diverse in its powerups (still weaker than the 2D games, but Galaxy 1 had very bad power ups, I agree with that).

If you're ever willing to jump back, I think Galaxy 2 is worth a try. I would give Galaxy 1 maybe a 6 or a 7, Galaxy 2 would be a 9 or a 10 to me, just much better designed though same concept overall obviously.

Sounds like I'll have to play Galaxy sometime.

I not too experienced with the 3D Mario games - I've played 64 and 3D Land, but not Sunshine, Galaxy 2, or 3D World....

That's too bad. The technical issues (i.e., graphical stuttering whenever the game autosaves) are not that bad given the show's stilted animation. They do, however, detract somewhat from an otherwise excellent video game experience.

EDIT: I am also going to add that the Canada sequence in this game is incredible and will delight more than a few members of this forum.

1. Sonic Triple Trouble - Gamegear - 2D Platformer (5/10)
2. Hearthstone - PC - Cardgame (8/10)
3. Portal 2 - PC - Puzzle (10/10)
4. Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition - PS3 (10/10)
5. XCOM: Enemy Unknown - PS3 (10/10)

Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition (PS3)
SF4 was a great throw back. It went back to a lot of the routes that were established in SF2, where as SF3 did more its own thing.

I personally thought SF4 may have just been a better SF2, though I hated Ultras at the time. With that in mind though, I never got SF4 despite being a really big fighting game fan.

Fast forward a few years later, and I've finally decided to jump on board when I found a copy of Arcade Edition at a gamestop.

I love the emphasize on zoning, but man, the roster has grown huge since vanilla version. Half the characters are whooping my ass, and I have no idea what they do, or what even my own character does!

I've finally bit the bullet and decided to keep it simple and just go with Ryu or Guile, trying to learn what some of the more exotic characters do through battle experience.

I'll likely upgrade to Ultra, but this is a nice game to get my feet wet. Only problem is I don't have a stick, and some of the characters in the game can't really be played properly because you need to press 3 buttons at the same time to use some abilities (which conflicts with EX attacks, which you need 2 buttons at the same time to use them).

Also, El Fuerte is so fun to use, but damn is he weak >_>

I've always hated the art style for SF4, but when I actually beat it and watched the credits which showed all of the characters doing their moves in slow motion while the camera is zoomed in, I thought it looked fantastic.

I don't know what I'd rate Arcade Edition, but it's basically a bigger and better SF4, so I guess I'd have to at least give it a 10/10! When I dive more into SF4s meta, I'll likely revisit this.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown (PS3)
This was my first dive into the XCOM series, and it was great.

Fantastic strategy RPG, with some elements that I haven't seen before. The cover system is very genius, and gives XCOM its only flavor from other tactical games.

Due to the fact that nearly everyone in the game has guns, it is a bit of a learning curve learning what distances your characters are safe from attacks. It's certainly a process.

One impressive thing that I did not expect from this game, was how good its macro systems were. There is a lot to do in terms of managing your money. You can invest in satelites to lower global panic, space ships to down UFC ships (so you can loot them), upgrade your troops or buy more, invest in weaponry/armor/misc perks. There's always a few things to do in between every mission, so it doesn't feel like you're going from fight to fight.

There is a lot of content and depth to this game, so much that usually the thing that kills you are the things you just have no knowledge of. The first time I saw a Chryssalid I got fucked up because I had no idea how strong it would be. On the playthrough in which I beat the game, I actually used Xcom Wiki to look up what certain things did (also helps a lot with researching technologies, since you don't really know exactly how good the stuff youll get will be until you actually make it).

The graphics aren't very good at all, and I found my game bugging out a lot, nothing major, but the depth perception can be pretty messed up at times. The art style isn't too bad, but visuals is a very weak point with this game. Also, don't expect much narrative, not that type of game.

Other than the graphics/narrative which are minor problems because the game just doesn't emphasize them, there are two key problems.

The ability tree is very limited, and with only four classes, it feels like you're raising the same character over and over again. When you level up, you either are given one ability or you have the choice between two abilities. The problem is, the few times when you have a choice between two abilities, one ability is almost always clearly superior to the other. So if you want your character to have unique powers, you feel kinda dumb because you know that you just made your guy intentionally worse.

Certain maps, mainly maps where you have to raid UFO ships, it can take a while before action starts up. You can't have your characters run across the map because of Fog of War, so you have to inch up your away across what are usually large maps, and often times, when you're just looking to fight already, the bad guys could be on the opposite side of the level (it is random where they spawn).

The game is still pretty awesome, I had no problems trying to play the game over and over again to beat it. Took me four tries, and boy does it hurt when you have a highly ranked character die (deaths are permanent). Plenty of times when I just stared at the screen making a " " face.

If you're looking for a tactics RPG, this is the game to get. The best one I've played so far. I give it a 10/10.

42. Shock Troopers (PlayStation 2 - SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1)
43. Shadow Blasters (Genesis)

Shock Troopers is the Together Retro game for April. I beat it yesterday before the thread was even up. It's an overhead 8-way shooter, similar to Commando or Ikari Warriors. The control scheme is a bit different though - holding fire locks your shots in a given direction - so you can shoot up while moving right, for example. It suits the game well, but it can take some time to get used to. The game looks beautiful, as you'd expect from a Neo Geo title - bright bold colors with huge anime character sprites. I may do a few more replays to shoot for a high score. In my limited experience with Neo Geo games, this may be the best one I've ever played.

Shadow Blasters was an hour-killer I played last night before bed. It's a thoroughly mediocre Genesis platformer with some apparent Mega Man and Shinobi influences. Not terrible, just kind of dull and easy. I manage to play through it about once a year for whatever reason.

My thoughts exactly.

I understand. That is an experience you need to have with a nice group of people who really want to learn the game. It takes a lot of time, a lot of practice and a lot of interactivity. It isn't for everyone. Me though? I can't get enough of it!

I've played through it several times, and I think that it is probably my favorite Neo Geo Game that (1) isn't a fighter; and (2) doesn't have the words "Metal Slug" in its title.

All discussions of Shadow Blasters must reference its amazing case art:
