The only reason to own StarCraft 64 was not having a PC and even then you were probably better off not bothering.Xeogred wrote:Starcraft 64 had co-op, it was really, really cool. But yeah, expect huge lag spikes about every 5 seconds and crazy controls. It's probably a huge cartridge.

Starcraft 64, oh lawd....
Re: N64 and how it holds up today
It was that, or take turns playing on the PC with my friend which usually ended up being me getting bored not wanting to watch him play for hours so I'd go home.Gunstar Green wrote:The only reason to own StarCraft 64 was not having a PC and even then you were probably better off not bothering.Xeogred wrote:Starcraft 64 had co-op, it was really, really cool. lol, I played it on the PC myself at home all the time though. But the new co-op feature on the N64 was noteworthy.
Re: N64 and how it holds up today
I think what hurts the 64 is that it was basically a 3d console, and this was the brave new world of 3d. My favorite console of the 32 bit area was the Saturn because it was the last gasp of classic, 2D sprite based gaming. It also doesn't hurt that my favorite genres are 1. Turn based RPGs 2. 2D fighters 3. Shmups. and 4. 2D platformers/side scrollers. So while I love the SNES and feel it holds up because of how it excelled in those genres and 2D, the N64 was not my thing. But, if I were a huge fan of 3D platformers and FPS games, I still don't know that it would hold up, because Nintendo and their developers were still getting the hang of those games on the console, and the PC was really where those genres excelled. Being forward thinking doesn't always pan out, but neither does sticking in the past necessarily, I think ultimately the PSX won the day because it struck a good middle ground.

(I know this is a old topic but I feel like I had to respond)
I really feel like the n64 holds up pretty well. I mean I still love when I'm at my dads to go downstairs and play sm64, dk64, and LoZ: OoT(I didn't have many of the other games besides a nascar game, wwe, and a namco arcade cart). Those games still hold up pretty well and are great to go back and play. That thing is about as old as I am and it still works which is a miracle knowing how much i played it over the years....I really ought to see about getting some new carts next month when I make my trip up to goodwill computer works and save point. I'd be amazed if I really found anything at flea markets(though I am comparing this to the one I always went to at the beach which never had anything in terms of games from what i recall unless I missed it). Sometimes I'd rather play sm64 than some of the new marios that I have. Sidescrolling platformers are nice and I know it's where mario got his true start as a character but sm64 was a true work at the time and fun to play as well

I never really got in to Galaxy and the other later 3D Mario titles, 64 is still my favourite (3D) Mario title, I play it from time to time, although emulated as no longer own an N64.
@darsparx: Your post reminds me of a post in that "when will SNES cart prices go down?" thread where someone replied as soon as people's nostalgia for the N64 takes over.

Re: N64 and how it holds up today
Heh well what can I say? N64 is that system(like the snes, and nes for others) that is the first system I ever played. I'm 19(going on 20) and that's probably why I say that since it was just coming out then. The same holds true for the gameboy color. What's that saying again? You never forget your first love or something like that? That's probably why I still keep going back. But the whole reason I still go to galaxy, and some of the newer zeldas is because they are reminiscent of what got me into gaming in the first place. My nostalgia and first loves have always been the game boy color and n64 and probably will never forget that. I still love those old games and I just can't compare them to new games, they were in a league of their own. Though if we wanna go gc/ps1/ps2 and some stuff on the 64(not as much there since I had a very small collection there), there was fun, hilarious, whimsical platformers and nothing much does that kind of take on stuff except some indies...Nyukki wrote:I never really got in to Galaxy and the other later 3D Mario titles, 64 is still my favourite (3D) Mario title, I play it from time to time, although emulated as no longer own an N64.

I think the saying goes you never forget that first love....and n64 was my first console and the very thing I spent all my time on for some odd reason(we had the nes but I didn't really try to play it much)

Re: N64 and how it holds up today
Well you were probably much older than me, and probably cared more about the specs, back then it was a console and I had some decent games for it even if it wasn't a huge collection and I didn't care i was a kid and had fun. To each his own but this it was my first love as a console because it was a console and just that unlike some of these modern consoles XDnoiseredux wrote:I didn't think N64 held up when it was released.
