I have a VB emulator on my Wii. When I stop being lazy and hook up my Wii, I'll probably try out Wario Land.
Re: How's your Virtual Boy gaming going?
Dude. I got a Virtual Boy for Christmas this year, because I actually have been wanting one for quite a while. And I have zero regrets. I fuckin love this thing. Retro gaming heaven.
I've been playing a lot of Mario Tennis, and Mario Clash. Both are fantastic games.
In Mario Tennis, I play as Princess Peach a whole bunch, and have recently started playing on the normal difficulty. I really like the mechanics of this game, it was very well made. It made tennis interesting, which by itself should earn it an award.
Mario Clash is just fun. I enjoy those moments where you set up the perfect combo and knock down 5 spiked shell koopas in one throw. This is an extremely fun take on the Mario Bros arcade game.
Other games I got, but haven't played too much yet, are Wario Land, Red Alarm, Teleroboxer, V-Tetris, and Vertical Force. Although I was pretty dissapointed when I found out V-Tetris was not the 3D Tetris game. Still fun though. Red Alarm is hilarious, Teleroboxer is super fun, Wario Land is one of the best platformers I have ever played, and I am very excited to start playing Vertical Force soon.
I wanna get a flash cart sometime soon. There is a lot of fantastic homebrew for this console. I mainly wanna try out the Street Fighter: Hyper Fighting port. It's apparently awesome, and really well made.
No headaches so far. Or eye strain. Just the occasional sensation of being in space and/or on drugs after playing for a half hour straight.
This is the only console I need for the next gen. No PS4. No Xbone. I got all the gaming of the future I need.

Pshh, you can't truly experience Wario Land without the migraines, man! Real gamers love the pain.Violent By Design wrote:I have a VB emulator on my Wii. When I stop being lazy and hook up my Wii, I'll probably try out Wario Land.

Definitely get around to finishing Wario-Land, several times. It's got multiple endings depending on how much loot you pick up and how fast you beat the game, so it's pretty groovy. Teleroboxer is really sweet. One of two games to actually make use of that second D-Pad! And believe it or not, I think V-Tetris is the preferred version of all the Tetris games on VB, but that's just opinion.
I hope you're digging the VB! That sounds like a pretty really awesome Christmas gift. Whoever got it for you deserves a peck on the cheek, or something.
And I know someone said they were looking for in-depth reviews of games.. If I had the time, I would. I know Nintendolife does pretty good reviews for nearly all 22 games on the system. I really disagree with about half of them, though.
Re: How's your Virtual Boy gaming going?
Are there any suggestions on how to get into VB without breaking the bank? eBay research is not encouraging.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
Re: How's your Virtual Boy gaming going?
I'm finding a couple of used consoles on eBay for around 50 dollars. Otherwise, I think you're going to have to shell out 100-200 for something in nicer condition. The console is the biggest investment you'll make, though. You can find Wario Land, Teleroboxer, Mario's Tennis, and V-Tetris easily for under twenty bucks on eBay.Flake wrote:Are there any suggestions on how to get into VB without breaking the bank? eBay research is not encouraging.
I managed to get really lucky and steal one CIB from a thrift store owner who wasn't in the know for 25.

Re: How's your Virtual Boy gaming going?
I have Three games for it.
RED ALARM, WARIO, and Mario Tennis.
Wario gets the most love.
Although, I as well have not played mine in over a year.
My Virtualboy is missing the rubber around the eyepieces.
Still works okay.
If you ever find one, you're better off getting the A/C adapter unit for it. Better than wasting all those batteries.
Look for some controllers out there. The plug may still be connected to it.

I know you can create your own makeshift virtual boy eye frames (or whatever they're called).

And you can find the original Nintendo foam ones on online for around 25 if you look hard enough. They're mostly on Japanese gaming websites.

Re: How's your Virtual Boy gaming going?
I have a Virtual Boy with 5 games. It's been a while since I've played it, but mainly because it's a pain to move to my new place as it's so cumbersome and fragile.
The 5 games I have are Mario Tennis (pretty fun), Mario Clash (not a fan), VB Wario Land (good stuff), Red Alarm (I love this one) and Teleroboxer (fun, but kinda awkward to play).
I've pretty much got all the games I want for the system now. I'd like to pick up Vertical Force sometime, but the other games I'd be interested in (Panic Bomber, Galactic Pinball) don't seem to be anything special.
I've never had any problems with headaches or the likes. I wonder how many of the people who go on about it have actually used the system. I'd imagine the majority of people would be fine as long as they adjust the focus properly.

Re: How's your Virtual Boy gaming going?
I really do think the headaches are largely exaggerated. And I've never had a problem with the system being too fragile to move around, either. I bring it to friends' places and sometimes even play it in the grocery store parking lot when the lady friend has to go grocery shopping.alienjesus wrote:I have a Virtual Boy with 5 games. I think Wario-Land for the VB really epitomizes the whole series at its best. There's a lot of hidden little secrets, a lot of nooks and crannies that I'm still discovering to this day (which I think is really cool for a game this short). Not to mention, I love the music.
Galactic Pinball is a game that I find entertaining and pop in whenever I have an itch for anything "pinball-y." And I don't even particularly like pinball, so I surprise myself with how often I do throw it in. Definitely nab it if you get the chance.
I heard recently that the folks over at Nintendo in Japan created Wario to be a stereotypical American.. anyone know how true this is? It'd be hilarious if it was.

Re: How's your Virtual Boy gaming going?
I have a few games on my Virtual Boy and can say that I enjoy what it has to offer and wish for more to expand on the collection. (Gotta wait to find my hands on a Flashboy so I can get in on the homebrew).
The games I own are Red Alarm, a nice wire-frame, star-fox style game. The controls are good and the only flaw I have is seeing the walls and barriers. In later levels it can be very difficult during some of the more mazy stages (like the waterfall stage.)
I also have Mario Tennis and do not enjoy that one very much. It doesn't have the sense of impact that the N64 era and up of Mario Tennis. It doesn't have the cool features to make it really worth while.
I also have Golf, which I really need to spend more time on as I think I would thoroughly enjoy playing the game. Golf games always seem to appeal to me as a nice distraction and I need to pop this in and give it a shot.
The last game in my collection is Vertical Force, a vertical SHMUP that has two planes of play that you can fly back and forth to. This is another game I need to really try getting into, as it looks like it would be pretty fun, even though SHMUPs are not my forte.
I really need to find the AC adapter, or find someone who can help me mod one (as I heard it is quite possible). Also, I want to get WarioLand and TeleroBoxer, as those two seem very visually pleasing. I could also go for Mario Clash just so I could attempt beating it....but I would definitely need that AC adapter.
