End-Gen Games: To Buy or Not To Buy

As far as Japanese devs go, there seems to be plenty of PS3 support lately and into the near future. Western made games will probably all be focused on PS4/XB1 from now on though.

No kidding. A lot of good looking titles for the PS3 have yet to be released. And there's not the biggest market for these Japanese developed games over here, so I can bet if they turn out to be quality work, you'll see them as being "collector's items," due to limited runs. Persona 5, Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z, and even the FFX remasters to name a few. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if South Park's Stick of Truth accrued ridiculous value. That cartoon's got a bit of a cult following over here.

I agree - in the next few years, expect to see some real collector pieces from the RPG genre for the PS3. The 360 might still have a few gems in store for us, but they lack devs like NISA (among other Japanese companies) to really support the genre the way Sony does.

That's true, the Western companies jump ship pretty quickly.

I'm interested in seeing the system requirements for Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as I'll end up getting those for the PC.

I think it's going to be even more apparent now because of the way JP devs struggled to develop HD titles at the beginning of the PS360 era. Also add in the fact that the home console market in Japan is a diminished one and there ya go.

I think it's going to be even more apparent now because of the way JP devs struggled to develop HD titles at the beginning of the PS360 era. Also add in the fact that the home console market in Japan is a diminished one and there ya go.

I feel Japanese developers should stick to the portable due to a cheaper development cost (assuming). There's a lot of portables out there in their home country. All we need is publishers willing to take the risk to bringing it out worldwide. If there is a constant stream of those titles they'll do alright.

If anyone has any interest in the new announcement for Fairy Fencer F, the splash page is now up. The game itself will likely sell as well as other NISA games, so it will likely be a collector's item down the road. Gotta give them credit for being one of the few companies out there that is actually passionate about bringing JRPGs to the NA public, even though they can't be making a ton of profit. Reminds me a lot of Working Designs in the 90s.

Is a physical copy of that game ever coming to NA? I find it very hard to believe it's going to remain a JP exclusive, especially with how popular the DnD brand is here.

Well it technically has come out in North American - digitally on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U. You'll need to import if you want the physical version.

And it's not unprecedented for D&D games to stay in Japan. The Saturn version of these very games was never released over here, and neither was Dragons of Flame (Famicom).

What are you guys' thoughts about Dark Souls? Will the release be big enough that it won't be a super sought-after title?

I doubt it, the Souls franchise is quite popular and will likely sell well. I have the CE with knight statue pre-ordered, which will probably hold its value, but the normal game is iffy. There's a lot of anticipation surrounding it so I imagine it will sell a decent number of copies.
