Does anyone else feel this way about Bravely Default?....

Post by Godot102 »

Bravely Default was one of the reasons I picked up a 3DS a few months back and I preordered the collector's edition. Now that I have it and have played it for a while, I can't help but feel a little disappointed by it. The story seems very underwhelming and just flat out uninteresting at times and the characters don't help it either with the exception of Edea. Her 'Mgrgrgrs' are adorable!. My biggest problem is that the game seems to be obsessed with having many cut scenes sometimes back to back and they seem to go on for much longer than they need to. I would be fine with this, if the story was good but I'm not a fan of it or where it's going so far. The story appears to be really cliche and bland to me. :(

The party chat was also disappointing as more often than not, they seem to be an excuse to throw in a tutorial for something I already knew or figured out. Also the way the tutorial quests were presented makes no sense. Why in the world are they giving me a quest to optimize my equipment when I am almost 10 hours into the game? My friend who is much further than I am told me that later on, he got a quest that told him to turn on Autosave. Why have this quest so late in the game? I know these quests are optional, but I think it may have been a better idea to just have them all available from the getgo. That way players can discover all the features of the game them as they play it and even get rewarded for experimenting.

I also do not like how you are given only one job at a time. In FFV I remember getting a handful of jobs whenever you reached a crystal which was cool because it allowed you to experiment with all of them so you see which ones fit your playstyle the best. Getting one job at a time turns what could have been a nice open ended experience into a much more linear one. I am aware there are side quests that can get you new ones but still I can't help but feel that system could have been handled better.

I do like the battle system a lot. I have a ton of fun grinding and leveling up the jobs. Its just unfortunate that the rest of the package doesn't seem as polished as it could have been. To be fair, I am only about 10 hours into the game, so it could get better but so far I am not too impressed. I look online and everyone seems to be praising this game and every aspect of it. Is there something I am missing or not seeing? Or maybe I just don't get it. Perhaps I over hyped the game for myself and as a result, set my expectations way too high. Does anyone else feel this way or is it really just me?

Maybe the game just starts slowly...? I felt the same way about Radiant Historia at first and then BAM all of a sudden it was awesome.

That's what I'm hoping will happen with this game. I really want to like it, but unfortunately the game seems to be doing everything it can to make me dislike it...

I'm not much into these types of games but I was surprised that it was inspired glee (my favorite show) and 90210

I agree, just slightly though. I'm still really enjoying it but it's mainly for the battle mechanics and job system aspect to the game. The story is kind of meh so far and the world is nowhere near as fleshed out and involving as a traditional Final Fantasy game but it's still more enjoyable then what Square currently produces under that name.

So, maybe a bit of a letdown but still quite an enjoyable RPG. A sequel is in production already so hopefully it gets localized as well.

Thinking about getting it. No idea if it's good, but the music is pretty awesome from what I have listened to.

Actually, I will admit the music is pretty cool. I like the battle theme a lot. If you are alright with putting up with a meh story, then give it a shot because the battle system is fun. Do not go into it expecting to play the next groundbreaking JRPG.

Honestly it's really good, it's just that it was propped up as being a classic "Final Fantasy" game and it really doesn't compare with the PSX era games in that series at all. There's a lot of depth to the gameplay and how you develop your characters which is the draw for me to keep playing.

Also, the music is awesome and the backgrounds have a cool 2D painting style that really makes certain areas look gorgeous.

The only thing holding me back from completely agreeing with this is the battle system. The battles are by far the best and most standout parts of the game.
