I played through Legendary Axe a few years ago, and you describe it perfectly. It is a really cool game, but IMO, the Bonk trilogy blows it way. I hope you enjoy them. (You should also give Ninja Spirit a try if you have not already.)

It is really unique and really inexpensive. Although I haven't completed it yet, it is definitely one of the best GBA exclusive platformers (right up there with Astroboy, the Castlevania games, the Metroid games, and Wario Land 4).

I will give Ninja Spirit a go aswell. Truth be told, outside of the multiplayer games and shooters, my knowledge of TG16/PCE games is very low. Legendary Axe is just kinda painful at times. Stupid stage 3a.

It is definitely old-fashioned at times, but IMO, it is way better than Rastan, the game from which it draws its inspiration.

A few years ago, I resolved to play through all of the TG16 "classics" using an emulator. It took me a few weeks, but I finally played through Legendary Axe, Bonk's Adventure, Ninja Spirit, Blazing Lazers, etc. It was a trying but, overall, good experience, and I would love to collect for the system at some point.

I have a TG16 but it only gets used for Military Madness. My CoreGrafx got a lot of play for a while with Bomberman 94, Battle Lode Runner, and the shooters. Sadly I still havent picked up a Cd unit, but the prices of everything TG16/PCE related has gone up over the last year. Legendary Axe, which use to be a $10-15 hucard, is now $20-30. Military Madness was $20-30 and is now $50+ on a good day.

Many many years ago I was given the GamePro Hot Tips for Adventure Games (when one of my older brothers friends upgraded to a SNES) and since I didnt have a TG16 until the late 2000s, I never had a chance to play those TG16 games I always wanted to play. I remember looking at Legendary Axe, JJ and Jeff, Dragon Spirit, and It Came From the Desert specifically. And try as I might, I just gave up on JJ and Jeff/Kato and Ken. It is just not worth the frustration. And now I own three of those four, still missing It Came.

prfsnl_gmr wrote:Wario Land: Shake It! (Wii) - This game is great. I am plowing through it, and it may end up as my second-favorite game in the Wario Land series. (Wario Land 3 is going to be tough to beat.) The animation is spectacular, and like the best modern Nintendo games, the challenge scales based on your goals. (Beating the game is easy; getting all of the treasures is a true challenge, and only patient, seasoned players should even consider completing all of the challenges.) It is very well designed, and I am surprised it is not as popular as some of the Wii's other 2D platformers.
I really want to play more of this game in the near future. It's a really great platformer from what I've played. It's also by the same development team that worked on Kirby's Epic Yarn. (Another excellent platform game for the Wii.)

I actually thought it started out a bit slow, which - hopefully - means that it will exceed your expectations. I also think that familiarity with some of the mechanics from the other games in the Wario Land series is helping me to appreciate it more. (I played through SML3: Wario Land, Wario Land 2, Wario Land 3, and Wario Land 4 last year; so, controlling Wario is effortless at this point.)

In any event, let us know when you dive into it and let us know what you think of it!

TG16 is something I wish I had started collecting years ago. Sadly, I think that ship has sailed at this point. (Also, Military Madness is a great game. I am about half way through the PS1 version - i.e., Nectaris: Military Madness - and I need to dive back into it at some point so that I can unlock all of the maps from the TG16 original.)

Didn't that game have an *8* player link? I remember seeing that in a magazine - scary how one could get 8 people to play a Lynx game

Drill Dozer is on my GBA want list. It's still a cheap pick.

Ninja Spirit is just wow. Well, the arcade original is.

It boggles my mind how much this game slays Wonder Boy in Monster World. And I like Wonder Boy in Monster World.
