Uncharted had good voice acting and very impressive animation (when the frame rate wasn't choking). The environments were really pretty. That shadow puzzle in Uncharted 3 was pretty awesome. I've got nothing good to say about the rest of it though. It's not a good movie and it's not a good game.

Yeah, the shooting needs work. It's a shooting game. Wasn't Sonic that great platformer that needed work on the platforming?

Making the player stronger wouldn't improve the game; Drake's already pretty much invincible. All my deaths came from rockets fired by enemies who spawned offscreen, and Drake trying to climb a wall when I just wanted to run past it

Puzzles are fifth grade level. For the climbing segments, simply point the analog stick in the general direction of your target and press X. Insulting. I played Uncharted 2 and felt insulted.

Uncharted is my Spec Ops. It's pretty obvious Drake has already reached the pit of hell. It's a weird feeling murdering dozens of people while my makes avatar makes wisecracks and tries to decide which girl he likes more. Not one moment of regret. It was a game about the atrocities brought about by greed and hubris but the protagonist was having too much fun to notice. That's not a criticism; it's my favorite part.

Last year a friend and I rented Uncharted 3 and beat it in one sitting, on the hardest difficulty available to us. In its defense, this series never pads itself out by concealing important information.

Nah I don't think Uncharted sucks, I just think that, aside from the visuals, the game is generic. For me, it feels too similar. If that is not the case for other people, that is cool too.

And to stay on topic!

1. We Love Katamari (PS2)
2. Major Minor's Majestic Marching Band (Wii)
3. Mario and Luigi: Dream TEam (3DS)
4. Petz: Wildlife Rescue (Wii) (Don't Ask)
5. Flow (PS3)
6. Journey (PS3)
7. Shenmue (DC) (5th completion)
8. Ben There, Dan That (PC)

Just finished Ben There, Dan That which is a fun little adventure romp that uses the Adventure Game Studio. I could really feel the Sam & Max influences with its witty banter. The was very easy and its almost episodic, self-contained puzzles made it move along nicely. It is nice to not get completely caught up with arbitrary puzzles and monotonous pixel hunting.

I grabbed the Wii U Armored Edition of Arkham City late December '13 on the cheap and devoured that game in 4 days. Loved it
And even though it was obviously an afterthought, it utilizes the gamepad in really cool ways (which seems to be a recurrent gripe people have with the Wii U's library)

1/12: Kirby's Adventure (NES)
1/20: Injustice: Gods Among US (WiiU)
1/25: Super Mario 3D World (WiiU)
1/29: Metroid Fusion (GBA)
1/30: Metroid II: The Return of Samus (GB)

Finally did it. It took 6 attempts over the span of two decades but I finally saw my way though to the end of Metroid II. First, a confession: I used a map. The thing that has always turned me off about Metroid II is that there was no built-in map system. I could deal with that with Metroid because the design of the game made making your own map fun - every horizontal shaft intersects with a vertical shaft. Hand mapping this game would be a nightmare.

So for the first time ever, I tried the game with a map someone else had drawn and it changed the whole process for me. I was able to focus on the combat and surviving the environment of SR388 and in the process I finally realized what a marvel this game is.

Metroid II is your typical early 90's Nintendo RD-1 game. It is beautiful and way, way too ambitious. It often suffers for its ambition in that the game is designed for a portable screen with a mentality that would better befit a console game. Save points are too infrequent and the difficulty level is pretty high. Enemies do a lot of damage to you and resource management becomes vital - nothing sucked more than getting into a fight with an Omega level Metroid only to realize that I only had 10 missiles left and no clue which nearby enemies would drop more.

But that ambition wasn't all bad - it's not RD-1's fault that they only had the original Gameboy hardware to work with. The idea of hunting down a specific number of metroids was fantastic. Watching that number fall after each encounter was rewarding and it helped forge a narrative in my mind that I was really and truly hunting these monsters down. While the different types of metroid's became repetitive and left me longing for bosses like Ridley or Kraid, I liked how much character it gave the metroid's to see them evolve and find them in area's stripped of other enemies, as though the metroid had already killed everything nearby.

Another mechanic I liked was the use of lava to isolate you in a particular area until you were ready to move on. It helped keep the frustration down when I was having trouble finding my next target - the utter and almost complete lack of mandatory back tracking was also great game design.

The final boss and the ending afterwards was also very rewarding. Little touches like that remind me of the effort Capcom's second party developers put into the later Megaman Gameboy games and serves as a reminder of how much programmers could squeeze out of their limited hardware back in the day.

Okay, I'll stop rambling. TL;DR : Metroid II is great and I really miss Nintendo RD-1.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

It was a great ramble.

May have missed it, but on what platform did you use to play Metroid II?

This is the same problem I had with the first one. I went in thinking it was more of a platforming adventure game with some combat (and for the first couple chapters it was) and what it ended up being a shooter with a few platforming and puzzle solving elements. Which is fine and all, but I'm not going to lie and say I wasn't disappointed when I figured that out. For what it is, it's fine and the aesthetics and voice acting really add to it, but it could have really benefitted from a bit more variety.

I have yet to complete this game either. I found it a bit frustrating when I played it as a kid.

Your post is inspiring though, makes me want to tackle it again. :D
