Destructoid's Aaron Lindy wants to "tear my ass open".

I'm not sure how admitting that their rage was simply an entertainment ploy makes their situation any better. It'd be better to be a sincere person with flawed ideas than a whore for attention.

One argument with Jim Sterling was enough for this lifetime.
They have a show... just the idea that you want to be the face or voice that represents something and people tune into once a week or so... isn't that right there being an "attention whore".

They're entertainers, and people don't want to be entertained with honesty. When was the last time you heard, "I love watching ActionTurkeyNews because Bob Gobble is so honest." Not that often... maybe from some one older, or from your own lips. But sorry, you aren't the masses. Come on, take Stephen Colbert for instance... now that isn't actually who he is. So he is far from honest. And the "character" he plays is a massive attention whore (main reason I avoid his show and watch the Daily Show instead). Yet people eat him all up and adore his show. Do I have to say it? "Truthiness"... make me gag... but I'm not the masses.

Nor does this mean I condone what they had done. But that's probably why I don't watch a lot of TV and I am subscribed to 1 podcast (Stephen Fry) and habitually watch 1 video (Yahtzee).

I'm sorry though, your statement about being honest is a couple things:

romanticized, idealistic, and I agree should be the way it is especially for real people

but the world doesn't work that way and I'm more concerned about the sick and dieing then a guy who stands in front of a microphone and says "look at me, look at me".

I think you've got it the wrong way round there LOD, put too cynical a spin on it. People want to be entertained, but they don't want to be entertained by someone getting something wrong or a lie, it just makes people angry.

When I say people, I include myself, the masses and you
Atari ST, Atari 2600, Commodore 64, Master System, NES, Mega Drive, 32X, SNES, Amiga CD32, Atari Jaguar, Saturn, Playstation, N64, Dreamcast, Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox360, Wii

Gamegear, Lynx, Gameboy (100s of the bloody things), Game & Watches (coming out of my ears)

a) Again, most of the folk at Destructoid seriously get on my nerves (see previous threads on the topic) Niero the founder was great, but after he left to build his empire, it went down the drain. And calling them entertainers is far too much of a complement.

b) Alien Hominid was a great game in its console form.

c) $20 is way too much for a downloadable game. If I'm paying that much ($20 is the high side of my budget for a single game), I need to have a hard copy that I can sell if I don't like. I bought Lost Winds on the Wii and quickly felt like I wasted the $10 or whatever for it. I don't even have the satisfaction of having an arty/indie game sitting on my shelf or having the possibility of going up in value. Instead it's just taking up space on my Wii's limited storage and I'll never see my money again.

d) The had a point about playing the demo, but I don't know how much you can get out of that... I wish Wiiware had demos though....

e) You know what kind of great games you can get for $20? Just go through my "cheap games" and "hidden gems" series and you'll find a boatload of games you haven't played yet that are better and cheaper than Goo.

f) Why does it matter if its EA or two dudes in an apartment that you're stealing from? Just because its easier to justify ripping off EA? Mr. Self-righteous lost some points there.

I'm sure I'll think of something else later...

I second the support for Alien Hominid. It may not get the mechanics quite as right as other games, but it is still a fun game. Certainly a nice distraction after all the Metal slug I've been playing of late. :)

speaking of games on Wiiware and 360 marketplace and the sort. Why the hell do they have to have such weird conversion of points to price.

500 points == $6.25 on the 360. So 1200 points for a game is the equivalent of $15. Why not make 100 points a dollar and sell the game for 1500 points. Then it'd be easier for a purchaser to figure out how much they are actually spending.

But the cynic in me says, of course not, that's why it has a bizarre conversion... that way someone impulse buys and spends a couple bucks more then they thought because they didn't bother to assume the conversion in the first place.

I mean come on! I did it myself, renting those movies off of marketplace at 240 points a pop. I never really thought about it until I realized that's 3 dollar a rental... and that's the older movies. New releases are 320 points. or 4 dollars! Nevermind the fact you can only buy them in 500, 1000, or 2000 point bundles which never distributes nicely across the average price of movies and video games.

you buy 2000 points at 25 dollars, get a 1200 point game, 2 new releases and you have 160 points just sitting there. That's $1.75. There ain't nothing floating about the place for 1.75... I have like 160 MS points or something just sitting there on my 360. What the heck am I going to do with it? And no matter what I buy I always end up back at like 120 to 160 points just sitting on there! I could a cheese burger or something for that! They should have a McDonalds on Marketplace... beam that shit to my house Microsoft!

it just bugs me... it really does.

Nevermind the guys in place like Aussie and the sort... 100 points converts to $1.65 AU, or 85p UK (actual prices taking from MS). If they'd just put it 100 points at a US Dollar the Aussies would have an easier $1.50 AU or so to deal with... and the Brits would still be a bit stammered, but it'd be what... 50 to 60p or so?

I like Steam better, they just charge you the flat rate... no stupid points and the sort. Way to go Valve, you guys got it right!

It's not being cynical, it's remembering consumer obfuscation in Marketing 101.

The points system is rediculous. The only reason I think it exists is because of different exchange rates around the world. To help the stupid people who might complain that something may cost someone in the sates $15 and us here in Aus $25. But maybe that's just me trying to not be cynical. I agree, steam got it way more right.

Of course, a lot of Australians are banned from buying certain Steam games for some reason. There's been a lot of debate about that lately.

Wait. There's a Stephen Fry podcast!? The rest of this discussion is no longer important to me. Now I don't have to wait for the next episode of Qi to get my Fry fix.
