True. It's a lot like Ys in that respect.

Finally got a chance to dig into this more over the weeked.

I'm not the sort of person to jump to a strat guide after 5 minutes of being lost... but yesterday I found myself constantly jumping to the guide. There are so many random things I would have never thought to do in order to make the game continue. I'll put them in a spoiler, to avoid ruining anyone else's experience.
1)The Water town. As soon as I got here, I remembered that this is where I got stuck last time I played. For some reason, I didn't realize Paralyze was long-range, as I had only used it standing right next to people. That was my fault. So I finally get into the Queen's room, and into the back area... and can't do anything. Great, I knew what to do for all of 2 minutes before getting lost again. Apparently, I had to go talk to the queen again, as she now feels okay giving me the Flute of Lime, even though I talked to her probably 50 times before, just becaues I snuck into her room and did nothing.

2) Using Telepathy to talk to one of the Wise Men, I find out that I need to use "special glasses" to get into the windmill. So, once I find them, I start using the item on people, out on sea near the lighthouse, pretty much anywhere that seems significant. Of course, I was supposed to use it in the least significant place, a side barn to a house that had nothing in it, and no signs of suspicious activity. No towns folk ever tell you that they see someone coming out of this little barn or anything, you are just supposed to walk in and think, "Yeah, there is something here"

3) Okay, got into the lighthouse, fixed up the Statue, placed it on the alter and got access to a new area! Woo, now I should have no problem figuring out what to do. So, I go to this new town, am told to head north, and there is a gate with guards that I can't get through. I spend probably an hour walking around here. Apparently I was supposed to finally find the 4th Wise Man, by guessing who he was disguising himself as and using Paralyze on that person to make him reveal himself. Okay, I had no idea that I was finally supposed to find this guy, and I had no idea that he could disguise himself at all.
... and its not like I don't explore the game constantly. I have been able to find a good amount of these obscure things on my own, but some of them are just so off-the-wall! The game has great pacing otherwise, so perhaps they do this to elongate the game, or as a way to force you to grind, by having you get lost in hopes that you will kill stuff along the way... or heck, maybe I am losing my sharpness over the years.

All that aside, I am still loving this game. The boss fight with the Witch was excellent, and the sea music is awesome.

Played for a bit last night. Beat the first dungeon and went on to the second area. Here I grinded to level 5 and was looking for some statue. Was getting sleepy so I saved and turned it off.

I like it so far. I like how the main character actually moves quickly and isn't sluggish. I need to get used to thenhit detection. At times I get hit and it doesn't seem like I should quite yet. Thise little flying bats are annoying as hell.

Played a bit more last night. Grabbed the fire sword and the wind bracelet. I died in the north mt sabre pass and called it a night. I am having fun. Took me awhile to figure out how to use my rabbit shoes. Switching swords is starting to be a pain.

Yeah, I was wondering what the Rabbit Shoes did for a while. I would even equip and unequip them to see if it was changing my speed. I think I ended up figuring it out on accident, as I removed my magic to avoid accidentally using it.

I sorta fell off with this one. It feels like driving a Ferrari down a street that has stoplights at every block. Its probably just me, but I have an easier time finding well-hidden secrets in other games than I do finding stuff in here that is required to progress.

Yeah, the way the inventory works is very cumbersome, and as you get further in the game you'll find yourself switching swords almost constantly. A remake on the 3DS would allow them to do a quick switch of the swords on the touch screen and not have to overload the action button to use magic or items (could instead use X and Y).

Yeah they have started mixing enemies on the screen at a time that require different swords to kill. First annoying design decision.
