I'll admit that my judgement is probably clouded by the fact that I've beaten the games countless times and essentially have them memorized. I guess I can't recall exactly how cryptic they were the first time I played them. I can't say I initially finished either one without any kind of help, as I was a Nintendo Power subscriber.

That said, I'd rather be lost in a 2D world than a 3D one. Solutions always seem to be more clear when the graphics are simpler.

That's what I was wondering if you were trying to get at Bone. I thought it was funny he only mentions the 3D games, when the 2D ones are quite different to a large extent. Some people (here even) might prefer one side of the series or the other. So you never know, still need to give the overhead older ones a chance.

That's something I hadn't considered. MrEco might find the 2D games a bit more intuitive.

So yeah, ALTTP or Link's Awakening if you're interested in diving into the 2D games, no contest.

I have no problem with 2D at all of course. Just happened to have never tried the older Zelda titles.

I guess I'll check out Link to the Past, can't really hurt at least.

Also the changes made to Wind Waker HD sound really good. Though I don't think I'm about to buy a $300 console for one game. xD

Fair point. I'll come back once I've finally stolen a soul.

For reals: I've heard the game praised for its motion controls, and I've seen that a lot of people also had the issues that I did with swordplay being shoddy at best; imprecise, and unrepresentative. I got the swing I was looking for only about 1/3 of the time, so resorting to flailing was the most economical use of the wii-mote during swordplay for me, which made the battles feel trivial.
I really didn't care for the structure of the game, and found the story, dungeons, and just about everything else to be largely unmemorable, if not detestable to begin with. Which reminds me, now that I'm thinking about it, Fi is the most annoying sidekick, possibly, in video game history. Navi has nothing on Fi when one is also playing with a rechargeable battery pack. That thing seriously made me want to hurl my controller through the TV to shut it up. Also, loftwings can eat me.

Re-released for the GameCube with Fi removed: I might not hate it.

Actually, Eco, I'm going to recommend The Minish Cap, as it's a good game, but probably the easiest, and most straightforward Zelda game. It's not all that long at somewhere around four to five main dungeons, and it plays a lot like LttP while borrowing aesthetic cues from WW. Also, I think everyone here should give Crusader of Centy a shot at some point.

The motion controls are the last thing I think about with Skyward Sword.

The game was gorgeous, Zelda was different, and it has some of the best music in the series to date. It was just an amazing game.

Don't know what to say: If it doesn't play well, and flow smoothly, no amount of gaudy visual and aural sedative are going to make me feel good about playing a game.

If you just follow the main goals, Minish Cap isn't that long. But they did a great job of adding extra side stuff to do, which really stretched out the game.

The general pattern for every Zelda starting with LttP is that you need the dungeon's item to solve a puzzle in the dungeon and beat the boss (with the occasional exception on the boss). It's pretty formulaic in that regard, and often times you use that item to open the way to the next dungeon as well.

When I was a kid we beat the original Zelda, without the internet. Those Darknuts will teach you the meaning of pain.

Same here. I don't know how much time I spent using the candle on random bushes and bombing random areas just to discover some yet undiscovered secret.

My sister actually mapped out every dungeon using a pencil and paper.

Never did beat the 2nd quest, though, until I used the Nintendo Power guide as a teenager.
