Be that as it may but the Wiki page also stated that the expansion pak fixes a game breaking bug which is what I said. The list was posted as a source of where I found the fact in the first place.
I am buying all Saturn games, PM me with your offerings and I will let you know if I need the game or not! (Everything must be CIB)

Currently trying to knock off all the sports games, would like to get them <$5 each! Of course if you would like to donate them I will gladly pay the shipping! :)

Wikipedia says many things, I wouldn't trust it for these matters.

Did you know that Mega Man was originally designed as Mega Woman?

It's not "Half - Life 2", it's "Half - Life Squared". Look at the box you idiots.

Sonic CD is actually pronounced "Sonic Cuh-duh".

Jeez, to put the nail in this coffin here is a google search page with hundreds of articles about the bug.

https://www.google.com/#q=dk+64+game+breaking+bug

And here is yet another article with a video: http://www.gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=203572

TheSegaSaturnGuy wrote:One fact that I just discovered yesterday is that Donkey Kong 64 was only sold with the Expansion Pak because of a programming error. The game needed the expansion to even run, not necessarily because of advanced graphics or anything of that sort. I could imagine that Rare lost quite a bit of money because of it, especially because it was not originally planned.
This absolutely screams "bullshit."
http://whatculture.com/gaming/10-astoni ... mind.php/3

Taken from Wikipedia:
Donkey Kong 64 was one of only two Nintendo 64 games to require the Expansion Pak (the other being The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask),[3] which provides 4 MB more RAM for enhanced graphics and more expansive environments,[4] as well as to fix a game-breaking bug
Still not really buying it. It doesn't make any sense. What kind of "programming bug" would require an extra 4MB of RAM to fix and couldn't be fixed any other way? More likely, they just needed that extra 4MB of RAM because the game was simply programmed to require it. It sounds like the author is either misconstruing something or just flat out talking out of their ass.

Besides, shipping games that make use of new peripherals with those peripherals has always been pretty common practice for Nintendo.

I know quite a bit of various gaming trivia, but the only ones on that article I've ever even heard of were 10, 2, and 1. Number 3 sounds like it's based mostly on that cheeky FF7 magazine ad that had a swipe against the N64. That combined with stuff that's just plain inaccurate (the whole Luigi being because of NES limitations despite the fact that he debuted before then) along with the lack of citations leads me to think the author is probably just repeating random rumors and such that he's read about elsewhere online.

EDIT:

According to these sources, the author is just misconstruing stuff basically.

A better way of putting it would be that DK64 was originally designed to use the expansion pack optionally for "enhancement" (like Rogue Squadron for example), but late in development it was discovered that the non-expansion-pack enhanced version of the game was running into nasty unexpected issues, so they were forced to make the game expansion-pack only. That makes a bit more sense.

The author made it sound like the game was never originally designed with the expansion pack in mind, that it was only added as the only option for fixing some bug.

I once read on Wikipedia that several Namco Tales Studio games had not been created by Wolf Team but were in fact developed by Teen Wolf, starring Michael J. Fox.

That one did come out from a Square employees comment shortly after it was announced that FF7 would be a Playstation game (the ten cart part atleast). I still believe it could have fit on one or two carts without the cutscenes.

Maybe. They did manage to fit RE2 onto a cart after all, but that was also really late into the system's life and was one of the largest capacity carts ever made for the system.

Nintendo going for carts over discs is pretty well known as a big reason why Square went to Sony, but the employee comment does still sound pretty cheeky though. Sounds like they just took the literal amount of data the game was expected to take up, FMVs and all, and divided that number by the largest cart size currently available. Wouldn't be surprised if that comment was the inspiration for that ad too.
