It's a real shame this game never made it to the NGPC.

Just beat the Bug boss, got Ball of Fire.

Music in this game rules.

It seriously does.

Tangent: When I first decided to delve into the 8-bit era of RPGs years ago, I assumed (wrongly) that Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest must be the creme of the crop... and when I wasn't very impressed with them, I figured 8-bit RPGs must just not be for me.

Having played Ys, and now this, I am happy to be dead wrong.

Sounds like you might prefer the action RPGs of the 8-bit era. 8)

There are 8-bit versions of Ys II and III which are also pretty cool. Japan-only of course.

I wish Crystalis had a sequel. I may just play the GBC port when I'm done with it on NES.

Ah, you may have caught me on a slip-up. I played Ys on the Turbo CD, so it might not be 8-bit. It definitely had that vibe though.

I did enjoy Final Fantasy and Dragon's Quest... but I wasn't blown away by them. They were pretty much what I expected. I don't recall ever loving a particular tune, or feeling that a certain boss was really well-done. I liked the paradox in Final Fantasy though, even if it was nothing complex.

Crystalis, so far, has been excellent. I feel as excited to get home and play this as I would with a fine RPG from any era. It doesn't feel dated whatsoever.

I would be interested in trying out some 8-bit turn-based stuff too though (Unless I was wrong and the first FF and DQ ARE the better turn-based RPGs of the 8-bit era!)

Ah, I was thinking you were referring to the SMS version of Ys.

Dragon Quest III and IV are fantastic. Part I is, of course, primitive and tedious. And II is one of the worst in the series. So frustrating.

I adore the first three Final Fantasy games. II is the weakest, and I'm sure you've heard all about the totally broken leveling system.

But as far as action RPGs go, it's hard to top Crystalis.

Since this is my first time participating in this Together RPG, I should ask: What is the accepted spoiler level?

The TG-16 is 16-bit like the 32X is 32-bit. Which is, not really at all. The CPU is what matters.

8-bit turn based RPGs are much better on 8-bit computers. Try Wasteland of Pool of Radiance.
