82. Pinball Dreams (SNES)(Pinball)

Well, I finally got the high score on all four tables for the Super Nintendo version of Pinball Dreams. Pinball games aren't my forte, so for those of you who are highly knowledgeable, please bear with me. I'm not very good at pinball games, so despite having played this off and on for months, it's taken me a long time to get through everything. But sitting back, using the shoulder buttons to control the bumpers, the game is still a relaxing treat.

All four of the original Pinball Dreams tables are included in the SNES port. From what I've read, they're mostly accurate, though a few changes were made to the Nightmare table due to Nintendo's censorship policies. The tables are effectively split into two groups based on score: two low-scoring tables(Ignition and Beat Box) and two higher-scoring tables(Steel Wheel and Nightmare). All four tables are selectable from the start.

Personally I found that I preferred the higher scoring tables much more because they generally felt better laid out to me. Steel Wheel was likely my favorite, but I enjoyed the Wild West and railroad themes and that it assigned bonus score based on how far your ball traveled and relatively easy to obtain multipliers for the bonus score. Nightmare took a little getting used to, as its bumpers are difficult to reach along with its multipliers, but there are a lot of interesting options for ramps and tricks to earning extra balls. It's generic horror theme forms a nice contrast to the rest of the game's "positive" boards.

And then there are the lower scoring tables. Of these two, I prefer Ignition. This board is designed around spaceship travel. It feels a bit too widespread, as if it is lacking in options when compared to Steel Wheel and Nightmare. That isn't necessarily true, it's just my perception, and there is a heavy focus on repeatedly hitting targets imbedded in the walls to spell words like "fuel" while earning points. And then there is Beat Box, which is my least favorite. Beat Box feels like a confusion of ramps that block the view of the action, and in my months of playing, the only technical glitch I ever encountered was on this board, where a ball moving forward suddenly slingshotted backwards in a way that I found troubling. I did manage to earn my high score by focusing on working up to a movie deal for whatever band is apparently being championed in this music-themed table.

Bringing you more from the Exed vs. NES feature. Was this game a platformer? A shmup? Or a bastardized combination of the two? Someone thought of the "why not both?" tagline many years before a taco company did, and believe me, they didn't end up being the village hero. They were excommunicated and forced to live on dead armadillos and cactus water. Oh, what, the game? Yes, sorry. It's an overhead scrolling platform-shmup. Some of the enemy patterns reminded me of Star Soldier (also by Hudson). 7 stages in all, the first 3 are different but then the next 3 are "Super" versions of those previous 3 stages designed to pull your hair out over the perfect jumps that one must make hampered by the poor choice of a 3/4 overhead view and platforms that blend in with the background and try not to fall in water or pits only to start the entire stage again. The last stage is an "Ultra" version of Stage 2. Boss battles that ended up being easy made the platforming manageable, but I really hated those last 2 stages. Finally, you make it to the end, and do you get an ending? No. IT LOOPS BACK TO STAGE 1. If you want Nintendo Hard, this is a good example. I played it so you don't have to.

I was in a fighting mood, and these games provided quite the punch.

Kung Fu and Avengers are a good sign of things to come. They're both a little "off" but still a lot of fun. But to say these games won't age well is putting it nicely. They aren't just gimmick games, but close to it.

It's difficult not to like MK vs. DC if you are a fan of either series. Not my favorite MK game by any stretch, but the game delivers what it promises.

I liked MK vs. DC Universe, too. But with how fast it went to the bargain bin, I assumed it wasn't all that popular.

I thought it was pretty easy to dislike MK v DCU. And I'm a fan of at least one series (MK). The problem is, it's not sure what it wants to be. Had it played out like MK9 did later - and stayed on a 2D plane, could have really worked. But they made it too easy to sidestep projectiles which just kind of sucked a lot of the strategy (and fun) out for me.

I was okay with MK vs DCU. I'll probably never play it again and I ended up selling it, but I can't say it was poorly made. Mortal Kombat has never been about ground breaking or strategic mechanics, so that's something to consider. There's not really any Mortal Kombat game that can even hold a candle to the big competition games in terms of gameplay, MK games just have a different appeal. Which is totally fine, don't get me wrong, I love MK. I'm kind of indifferent about DC though. I like some of the characters, but that appeal wasn't there for me mostly.

Anyway, I think it's an okay MK game. Pretty much on par with most of the more new age ones. From the little I played of 9 it seemed like it was maybe a bit better, but not overwhelming.

I like a decent over the top story mode in my MK games, so I enjoy games like MK vs. DCU and MK Armageddon. It helps keep my interest and the cutscenes are great. They try to be so serious, but in no way could I ever take them seriously. It's goofball fun.

I enjoyed Armaggedon actually. Both the PS2 games were pretty decent in my opinion. I'm not a big 'story mode' guy in fighters (unless it's DOA5 which could have won a Razzie and found a happy spot on my DVD shelf) so that might be part of our differing opinions on MKvDCU. Though really like I mentioned my biggest complaint was just having side-stepping in a somewhat projectile-heavy game. Sort of like Toshinden back in the day, y'know? I think if they had made MKvDCU in the same engine that MK9 was in (and presumably Injustice) that it would have been a lot better. But having said all this, I don't hate the game. I just think there was a major misstep. I'm glad it was made, as it def opened doors for MK9 and as much as I'm not a DC buff, I think it's cool that they were able to bridge the two franchises. I mean if you mesh the MK characters with the DC characters and Freddy Krueger thrown in... it's just such a hilariously off the wall and gigantic universe that allows for insane rosters in future games.

tl;dr: I have plenty of complaints, yet I'm still a sucker for MK games.

I see what you may have or may have not done there.

Very valid complaint.

Mk vs. DCU made me want to start a "Video game Boobs" thread, but we all know how that would turn out. But in all seriousness the girls in this game must be wearing F cups. They even put my friend Hootie McBoob to shame. At least Ivy from Soul Calibur was fairly full figured, but these gals are tiny in every area but one.

MK characters are pretty ugly and/or ridiculous looking in general.

Kinda bad that most of them actually looked better when they were live actors in cheap costumes.
