Hit Windows key, type in calculator. Make sure the highlighted option doesn't look like a modern tile. Hit enter.

Seriously, stop thinking of the start screen as some kind of crazy touch thing and start thinking of it as a start menu with big tiles. Once you do that it's easy to navigate.

Win8 came installed on the laptop im using when i bought it. And so far i hate with a passion! The UI is complete garbage! When i have to do a search to find MS paint, Calculator or notepad there's something wrong.

The only good thing i will say about it is it does boot up VERY quickly.

But one piece of software i found may help people who have Windows 8 and want there start menu back, it's called Classic Shell.It is free and it lets switch between XP,Win7 or a classic start button.

Here's a video

It is so easy to disable and replace with a Start Menu
How?

This is exactly how to operate. I do this a lot in Windows 7 any way and it works great. Windows key type "calc" and you're good.

Classic Shell, the software you just linked to.

Most valid complaints people have with the OS is with its UI, not its performance (which can't be complained about because it is solid). Pretty much every UI complain people have can be fixed in someway.

I use Metro (I don't boot to it, I boot to the desktop) a hell of a lot more than I ever used the Start menu.

Windows 8 is just as stable as Windows 7, has a lower memory footprint, fast load times (if your using EFI firmware),

The UI is the big difference, you have to learn how to use it, but once you do learn, I personally find it more enjoyable to have a fully customized metro screen. I did not like it at first, but I use it a hell of a lot more than I ever used the start button (which I only used for the search feature).

If you just want to install an OS an run with it, go with 7, if you want to install an OS and don't mind tweaking it out a bit, disabling things you don't use and customizing the OS for a bit, Windows 8 is the better OS.

My 2c, but I don't really need to justify why I use it. I had Windows 7 installed from launch and loved it up until I installed Windows 8. It is a great OS, but Windows 8 is an upgrade, not just a new release.

Everytime a new OS comes out people complain out there ass about it, it took XP years to get the reputation it got, when it launched people hated it because of the high resources it used and lowered gaming performance. Windows 8 does the opposite but changes the UI, which can be custmized more than other releases and people kick still kick up a shit storm.

Hold down windows key and hit R, that brings up the run menu:
Notepad = Notepad
Calc = Calculator
Pbrush = Paintbrush
CMD = Dos shell

Its not the most obvious method, but it works well and they have not changed it in many years.

That ^ works if you know the name of the program. If you just hit Windows Key and start typing Windows will try and interpret what you're looking for and usually can find it quick that way.

Just as functional as Windows 7, I find it more so myself, though like many users here, I use RUN to launch a lot of windows native things. This is my Desktop and Metro.
