How to differentiate between SEGA Saturn RAM catridges

Post by Afrokid »

Hi my friends,

I just buy a couple of RAM carts for SEGA Saturn, but my question is... Is there a way to know the capacity of this? I know this exist in 1 and 4 M, so somebody know?.

Some of then doesn´t have label and just in the back is a number 670-5847, the rest just Japanese...

The one on the left is a first party Memory Card, known as Backup Memory.

Not 100% on the one on the right, I assume it is a memory card packaged with a Konami game, most likely because the save file was large. It could also possibly be a ROM cart, but I have not heard of any outside of KOF and Ultraman.

Neither of them are the 'standard' 1M or 4M carts.

Yes they are Memory Cards, not RAM carts.

There are third party RAM carts such as the 4in1 and its variants, which are cheat devices in most cases and aid in region free as well as having memory for saving. Other than those, officially there are only the RAM carts shown two listed above.

There are a two games that I know of Ultraman and King of Fighters '95 which have ROM carts, which have graphics for those games on a cart and are only used with those games, these were used before RAM carts came out to aid with the large graphics.

Then there are the official memory cards but Sega, like the one you have a above, then a lot of games in Japan, like a Tamagotchi and a few others have their own, licensed by Sega Carts, some are in different colours, with stickers for the game they came with, etc.

EDIT:

The green cart you have is a Memory Card from the limited edition version of Tokimeki Memorial: Forever With You.

Thanks a lot my friend you clarified all this pretty well I really appreciated.

When I plug a ram cart on the console the system menu specify that is a RAM cart or just recognize it as a Memory as well?

I just plug all the memory I have and all just give me the option to transfer files between the cart and the system.

Greetings!

If you have a RAM cart plugged in your system will not function any differently, unless you have games that require / use the RAM. Games that require it will give you and error message if it is not inserted when you start the game, games that can use it will have options greyed out, etc.

For the Memory Cards, some games will allow you to save directly to them, others will only save to the System Memory, in this case it can become full quickly, so the system allows you to transfer save data from the console to the cart.
