And sure Vanilla Ice and Fred Durst are hip hop. Not good hip hop. But hip hop. As you said, hip hop is a culture. And that culture consists of the Five Elements. One of them is Rap ("MC'ing"). Vanilla Ice and Fred Durst rap. If they rap good or bad is outside the conversation of defining these terms.

Rap is a verb. It is the Oral element of hip hop. The guy that Oxy heard RAPping about 'making it rain,' was on a HIP HOP song.

Rap =/= hip hop. Rap is part of hip hop, but doesn't define it. "Good or bad" isn't even part of the equation so throw that nonsense out. And I know this sounds silly coming from a guy who usually dresses in a suit and tie, but you are so wrong on so many levels.

There is no distinct formula to hip hop, and no five criteria. Shit, you don't even have to rap on a track to make a hip hop record.

And crap rap certainly isn't considered hip hop by actual hip hop performers.

LOL, are you serious? The Five Elements is a very established definition of the facets of hip hop. I didn't make it up. The community did. Before either of us were born.

Rap (the verb, the oral art) is a facet of hip hop. There's really not much else I can say to elaborate on that, Luke. It's a pretty cut and dry definition - again by the actual community that we're discussing.

So again, like last time we did this, I'm coming to the conclusion that you just have your own definition of "rap" that basically is defined by whether or not you like something.
