@oxy: You'll need to learn that the definition of "rap" is "hip hop that Luke doesn't like."
Which pertains of?

@luke
Wait, did you call me a numskull or him?

Noise thinks any and all rap is hip hop. We've been arguing about this for years. But he's on the side of Vanilla Ice as being hip hop, so there ya go.

Hip hop is a mindset...anyone can rap.

You numbskull. By your definition Vanilla Ice and Fred Durst = Hip Hop, which is sad.
Yes, "rap" is a verb.

But how is saying "hip hop taught me..." wrong?

And sure Vanilla Ice and Fred Durst are hip hop. Not good hip hop. But hip hop. As you said, hip hop is a culture. And that culture consists of the Five Elements. One of them is Rap ("MC'ing"). Vanilla Ice and Fred Durst rap. If they rap good or bad is outside the conversation of defining these terms.
+1

Edit: This is turning into a 'what is hardcore' kind of debate.

Hip hop is a culture made up of five elements:
Hip hop is a broad conglomerate of artistic forms that originated as a specific street subculture within South Bronx communities during the early 1970s in New York City.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] It is characterized by five distinct elements, all of which represent the different manifestations of the culture: rap music (oral), turntablism or "DJing" (aural), breaking (physical), graffiti art (visual) and knowledge (mental).
If some kid got into breakdancing, but was terrible at it, I certainly wouldn't say "you are NOT hip hop my man. Breaking =/= hip hop, blah blah."

Rap is a verb. It is the Oral element of hip hop. The guy that Oxy heard RAPping about 'making it rain,' was on a HIP HOP song.

Rap song.

Rap =/= hip hop. Rap is part of hip hop, but doesn't define it. "Good or bad" isn't even part of the equation so throw that nonsense out. And I know this sounds silly coming from a guy who usually dresses in a suit and tie, but you are so wrong on so many levels.

There is no distinct formula to hip hop, and no five criteria. Shit, you don't even have to rap on a track to make a hip hop record.

And crap rap certainly isn't considered hip hop by actual hip hop performers.

You said it yourself. A rapper says bitch, a hip hop artist strays from anything oppressing.

LOL, are you serious? The Five Elements is a very established definition of the facets of hip hop. I didn't make it up. The community did. Before either of us were born.

Rap (the verb, the oral art) is a facet of hip hop. There's really not much else I can say to elaborate on that, Luke. It's a pretty cut and dry definition - again by the actual community that we're discussing.

So again, like last time we did this, I'm coming to the conclusion that you just have your own definition of "rap" that basically is defined by whether or not you like something.

Ok, luke. You tell me which one of these songs you define as "hip-hop" and which as "rap". I picked a variety of artists.

ASAP Mob - Full Metal Jacket

Immortal Technique - point of no return

Nas - NY State of Mind

Skeme - Pistols

alright so then Common you don't consider hip hop? I mean, he's def not someone I'd consider oppressing. But one of his earliest singles was "The Bitch In Yoo."

So yeah again - arbitrary definitions made up on the spot by Luke and only for Luke.
