Spyro the Dragon PS1 Trilogy

Turns out I had bought Spyro 2 with my American PSN account a couple of years ago but never bothered trying it out

Yeah the game seems to be fun, but not amazing. It was to its advantage that it came out on the PS1 and not N64 where it would have much more stiff competition.

The controls are fluent, but I just wish I could remap them so I can set the fire breathing attack to R1.

Also I looooove the animation for the characters. Specially Spyro's. It was very cute when he jumped in the water and he was swimming while sticking his neck out to avoid the water.

I will play a bit more today I think. I just played till I got to that castle main area.

Yeah, keep in mind that their primary competition on the console was Crash Bandicoot. They are what they are, relatively easy and simply, but still entertaining. "Cute" is a good way to describe them.

It's quite the departure from Crash too. It is obvious that it's inspired from the Rare N64 platformers, but suffers from being on a much weaker system.

It is still fun though so I'll probably play around a bit.

Despite not being as good as the best N64 platformers, Spryo is pretty fun. I've always found it impressive how large and open they managed to make the levels given the weak hardware.

Yes I noticed that. Apparently they used the program technique of "make stuff in the background look like shit" so it would take less processing power to draw it.

The result is outstanding.

Yup, the Spyro games are the first games I can think of that used progressive LOD to further draw distance while maintaining good detail up close and to help with frame-rate and streaming. Pretty much every modern game now uses this but at the time it was a new thing.

On a side R&C note, did you play the second one ZeroAX? I'm on it now, and it's about 9999 times better than the first. I expressed my issues with R&C1 recently around the forums, it was definitely rough and had issues. I'm still kind of shocked how much fun I'm having with the sequel though, so now I'm pretty pumped for the rest of them. Better controls, guns/health level up, better level design, better gadgets, better everything.

Only Spyro game I sunk a ton of time into back on the PS1 was Year of the Dragon didn't get around to the other two but it was very good as far as I remember. The other playable characters were awesome as well my favorite was Sergeant Byrd the penguin.

I played the PS3 trilogy. I really liked the middle one which was originally a DLC title, so it was relatively short.

The first one was a bit tedious for me cause it was a normal sized game and R&C's gameplay just didn't interest me so much.

And the 3rd one just went waaaaaaay overboard with the mini missions and it ended up way too tedious for me. I guess it wasn't bad, since I still ended up beating 2 games in the series, but I also ended up giving all 3 away for the charity auction cause I knew I would not bother with them ever again.

I recently replayed Spyro the Dragon for the summer challenge, I rushed through the first levels with out collecting the dragons, so I stopped advancing the game at like 49 Dragons . I was just too lazy to go back.

Anyway, the controls are great, and the graphics surprisingly still look good. The level design is pretty shallow though.

I do own the Spyro Trilogy but I find that Tak is more enjoyable. It plays very similar to Spyro. I believe they had one for the PS1 but I am sure they have the Power of JuJu for PS2 and Gamecube and it is fantastic. Check it out!
