If this game was a console game, you'd have to pay 150+ dollars to find a copy. 10 dollars is nothing for one of the greatest RPGs of all time. Even the cheaper "best RPG ever" console RPGs are 60+ dollars (the likes of Chrono Trigger and FF6&7 that aren't nearly as rare as Panzer Dragoon Saga, Earthbound, Suikoden 1&2, Xenogears etc).
BoneSnapDeez wrote:You can get a used copy for under $10 on Amazon...... but the original version of the game is Win 95/98 I believe so that could be an issue.
I've played the game by using the original dics on Windows XP. But I don't know if that works on Vista/7/8. Maybe using the compatibility mode works?

There are plenty of "best RPG ever" console RPGs that cost less than $60. KOTOR, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, FFVII, FFIX, Parasite Eve, The World Ends With You, and several others can be had for $35 or less. And that's for the original versions, not the even cheaper re-releases. There's nothing bad about considering $10 too much for an older RPG (especially a PC RPG) except for that fact that Noise is going to miss out.

I'm sure that the original Win95/98 CDs can be made to run on Windows 7, so that's a workable cheaper way to get into the game. It may be more of a hassle though.

Oh I didn't know Xenogears was that cheap. I guess I need to buy myself a copy. Anyway, even though there are a lot RPGs in the 20-40 dollar range, the fact remains that console RPGs are pretty much the most expensive genre when it comes to the average price of a game. I don't think there are any good Gen/SNES/PS1/Saturn/Dreamcast RPGs that you can find for under 15 dollars on eBay (maybe greatest hits PS1 games or a loose Genesis cartridge if you're lucky), so 10 dollars for the best story RPG of all time is very affordable (though I'm sure the big box version is more expensive than that, but seems like you can find the jewel case for 10 dollars or less). I've paid 7-25 times that price for many worse RPGs.

I'm not a fan of wrpg's, so $10 is more than what I would want to spend on one.

Why? Have you played any good ones? The game uses isometric perspective so it's not much different from XCOM control wise (though it's RTwP rather than TB).
I don't really see how any fan of RPGs could say that 10 dollars is too much for PS:T

Not much progress since my last update. There's a lot to do in the Hive so I've been derping around picking up some quests and whatnot.

Speaking of compatibility, I'm playing the D&D Anthology version in Windows 7. Seems to run fine, though I get a Windows error every time I quit the game. Also, the Elderly Hive Dweller kept glitching out on me as I was chasing her around.

I feel like this is one of those games best played in long stretches - unfortunately I don't have time for that. :?

No. I don't think I've played any WRPG's that I can think of.

When I say "I'm not a fan," I don't mean "I've played them and I don't like them." I mean "I've never played them, but I've also never been compelled." I would play one. I just wouldn't spend $10 to find out if I like them or not. If this had been a $6-ish GOG game, I'd probably have joined in, and if it turned out it wasn't for me, I wouldn't be too upset about spending the $6 (see: Zork Anthology). But $10... I'd be pissed that I dropped $10 on a game if it turned out I didn't like it.

I hear ya noise.

If I found "the best FPS ever" for $10 I'd still be on the fence about it. Especially if it was a digital version.

If you enjoy stories, dialogue and intresting settings in RPGs at all, this is a must play game. If you're only interested in combat, can't stand any dialogue and skip all cutscenes in RPGs, then there are far better WRPGs to start from, but this game not only has one of the finest RPG stories, but it is generally heralded as one of the best written video game stories out of any genre. And it's a pretty fine introduction to roleplaying and choice&consequence in RPGs, so it's a good place to start if you're new to WRPGs, even if the game uses D&D ruleset and hasn't got very interesting battles. Though the uninteresting combat isn't that big of a problem if you can tolerate the frequent random battles of most older JRPGs.

It's about 22-30 hours long if you don't do side quests. If it's your first isometric/D&D based RPG then there will be a learning curve at the start, but it's worth the time, money and trouble. It's one of those games like Silent Hill 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Portal, Journey and Ultima 5 that's not just a great game, but shows what video games as a medium are capable of. If it was paying 160 dollars for a copy of Radiant Silvergun to see whether you like SHMUPs or not, I'd understand being on the fence with this thing.

Anyways I think some one said in one of these RPG threads that GOG or some other site had a sale for Planescape Torment and bunch of other titles, not sure if it's on anymore. I think it included Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter nights and Planescape for 6 or 8 dollars or something crazy like that.

If the menial 4 dollar price difference is important to you, you could just pirate the game, and see after playing it whether it's worth to invest in a physical copy or not :)

this kind of describes me.

That's a pretty bold statement! And I love all those games with the exception of Ultima V as I've never played it. Side-note, I was planning to nominate Ultima IV for Together Retro 2014, as I've never played one, and IV seems to be one that's ported everywhere and highly championed.
If it was paying 160 dollars for a copy of Radiant Silvergun to see whether you like SHMUPs or not, I'd understand being on the fence with this thing.
But it's still like, if you never played a shmup and weren't sure if you liked them or not, you might not be quick to spend the $15 or whatever it is to get Radiant Silvergun on XBLA. You might just be like "eh, I'll wait for a sale or something." Especially if you've recently been buying games you were really into for $5-ish

BTW, I am a fan of shmups and I'm still kind of pissed that I spent the $15 or so for RS on XBLA... good thing I didn't drop $160 for a physical copy!

Nah, not my style. If I wanted the game enough to pirate it, then I'd just pay the $10.

Like I said, if some crazy sale comes along while you guys are playing then I'll probably join in. If not, I've got more than enough games to keep me happily busy.
