I believe it was hinted that there are also down-sides to Mega Evolutions. One example was that although your Pokemon gets a huge boost in stats while it's in it's Mega form, it can only do so by holding a Mega Stone which means it can't hold any other items. I'm sure there will be others to help balance it out.

Pokemon has been around for years, and this is one of their biggest games to date. I doubt they want to throw off the entire balance of the game due to some features. We'll just have to wait and see.
I don't play multiplayer pokemon, so I never bother with berries  . I didn't know they were considered such a game changer in multiplayer. I just have my pokemon hold items that give them permanent stat boosts :P

Berrries aren't really, but there is a whole bunch of other items that are regularly used - Leftovers to gradually restore health, eviolite to boost defences, choice band/specs/scarf to boost attack or speed stats, life orb to boost attack power, focus sash to survive a one hit KO and a whole selection of other useful stuff.

Losing some of these items could be a big enough deal to make pokémon who would otherwise be pretty great be a bit crap in competitive play.

Without knowing how big the stat changes are on these mega pokémon though, it's hard to know how it'll all work. In game, at least, they'll be pretty awesome - depending on how available they are. It could end up that the mega stones are pretty hard to find or only available after the main story ends.

 I just call every item pokemon hold berries for convenience....or just me being lazy

The thing is apparently those items give boosts to a single stat while the mega evolutions will probably boost all, if not that, most stats, being evolutions and all. So I still feel this will be unfair for multiplayer if you are not using mega evolution pokemon. I guess it would be an interesting mechanic if you could use it once per battle for a couple of turns, so it became really strategic when you use it, but ONLY if all pokemon have a mega form.

It would also be badass if the mega evolution changed pokemon types, so you end up with a pokemon which had a weakness against its opponent, turn into the exact type that will kick its opponents ass for a couple of turns. I could see that making battles VERY exciting.

Wellm for one they've said you can only use one mega evolution per battle, so you can't run a team of 6 mega pokemon.

And also, Mega Evolution will probably raise the pokémons base stat, rather than their actual stat. If Mega Charizards special attack base stat rose by 40 (which is a pretty significant increase), it would result in an actual stat number increase of 72-88 at level 100 depending on nature.

However, holding choice specs gives a 50% increase to the ACTUAL stat, and holding a Life Orb a 30% increase both sp.att and attack stats when attacking. a 50% increase of charizards sp.att is likely to increase is by 150 or more at level 100, which is a much more significant boost.

Because of this, I don;t think you're automatically screwed if you dont use Mega Pokémon. Items are such a big deal in this game.

I actually like the new system but I read on the main site that you had to pre-order to recieve torchic with mega-evolution? So does that mean you need to do those paid event dlce's to get mega forms? Can anyone verify this?

Other then that, as old as I am now I'm pretty excited for the game. :)

Paid event dlce's? I'm not really sure what you mean by that.

As for whether Mega Evolution will be available outside of events, it's never been officially stated, but I'd have to imagine so. I doubt they'd be so prominently showcasing it if it were not readily available to all players.

The torchic event is probably just because it's a starter, so it's 'special' and cant be caught in the wild for your game to mega evolve.

Also, you don't need to pre-order for the torchic, as it's a wifi event. You just need an internet connection. It is only available for a short time after release though, so you need to get it soon after the game releases.

I'm in favor of this as well. I think they took a lot of care in creating the models. So far, every Pokemon shown is exactly how I would think they'd look in 3D.

But will the battle animation be better, or will pokemon again use mellee attacks from 10 meters away?

So more and more info have been released around these two games. Full starter evolutions, these mega evolutions that are different for either game, and new Pokemon themselves. I feel its getting to be too much. The new monster designs are utterly ridiculous. A sword Pokemon and key chain Pokemon. Come now with this stuff. I think its too much stuff.
