Should The Redskins change their name and Logo?

Will do next time. Although, that habit has nothing to do with the superficial number of bits above my avatar.CRTGAMER wrote:My only beef is back to back posts which alludes to trying to build up a personal post count. Still wasn't polite, but I understand your response.Jmustang1968 wrote:

Re: Should The Redskins change their name and Logo?
I accidentally said the MLB as I was think of the Cleveland Indians. Which is still in the same context of which we are discussing. I meant to say that if the NFL allows them to keep this name after request from the Native Americans, they would be allowing racism. Within the manner which I had responded his reply was somewhat understandable. There were nicer ways to respond but I'm not in tears over this. Let's just talk football.Luke wrote:Still wasn't polite, but I understand your response.Jmustang1968 wrote:

Is Chief Noc-a-homa still around? I know the tomahawk chop and chant are still around.
Re: Should The Redskins change their name and Logo?
Nope. I think he was around til' the late 80's - early 90's.Luke wrote:Is Chief Noc-a-homa still around? I know the tomahawk chop and chant are still around.

Technically not since 1986. There has been periodic discussion about bringing him back, including having the "Screaming Savage" image on the Braves' batting practice caps last spring, though there was a lot of criticism over the decision.Luke wrote:Is Chief Noc-a-homa still around? As of right now, there are fewer than 1000 high school, college, or professional teams which use Native American names or imagery for their teams, down from over 3000 in previous decades. The entirety of this change has occurred in the high school and collegiate level.
It should also be noted that in a few cases, Native American tribes have no complaint with or actively agree with how a sports team uses a name. Such is the case with the Florida State University Seminoles, which has the backing of the Seminole Tribe of Florida after efforts were made in the 1970s to remove previous offensive mascots. Collegiate events at FSU also include members of the Seminole Tribe of Florida as special guests and active participants. While a few members of the Seminole Tribe of Oklahoma object to the name, the Seminole Nation General Council voted in 2005 not to oppose the use of the name.
Another example is the Central Michigan University Chippewas, which has the backing of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation. And in 2006, William & Mary was forced to drop the feathers from their logo by the NCAA, despite having the support of the local Pamunkey and Mattaponi tribes.

I just wonder why there isn't an uproar about Notre Dame perpetuating the stereotype that all Irish people are leprechauns who punch each other out.

I assume their fans are too drunk to care.MrPopo wrote:I just wonder why there isn't an uproar about Notre Dame perpetuating the stereotype that all Irish people are leprechauns who punch each other out.
