Yeah I think I'll have to agree with a lot of the general view here. I like James Rolfe himself more than his characters, and I'm usually watching just for him.

I don't care for his shit shtick, but he is well-informed and has generally good opinions. Despite not really caring for AVGN, I think I'd get along swimmingly with James Wolfe, were we ever to meet.
I'm still mad that the SNES wins for "better backwards compatibility" by virtue of an obscure, unofficial Famiclone that only uses the SNES for video output where as the Genesis was actually truly backwards compatible and the power base converter, an official add on, is just a cartridge slot adapter.

And yet, he can disqualify the official Genesis six-button controller for not being available right out of the box but it was totally okay to use the unofficial add-on in a different argument?

I'm biased sure, but so is he. It is still better than the AVGN stuff though.

Nah, it's either the CD-i Zelda reviews or plumbers dont wear ties
The Genesis vs SNES review is ok but too distracting with videos of kid James. I don't think he has the technical know how to make a video like that. Neither do I, but from what I've gathered, Genesis does some things better than the SNES. And he really left a lot Genesis' best games unmentioned like Rocket Knight Adventures, Shadowrun, Dynamite Headdy, Herzog Zwei, Gunstar Heroes (*), Pulseman etc. And he didn't mention Streets of Rage (*) or Thunder Force IV on the music comparision. I really have no clue how many Genesis and SNES games James has and how much research he has done, but I've gotten the vibe from his videos that he doesn't delve very deep in his research of different consoles, and usually only mentions popular games, and never really talks about import games, hidden gems etc.

(*) If I recall correctly

I didn't like his SNES vs Genesis video very much. My main gripe was that when it got to the game section, it wasn't SNES vs Genesis, it was just all his favorite SNES games. I think everyone knew he was going to say SNES from the get go, and to be fair he makes it heard this is nothing but his personal opinion and experience, but yeah it's just abundantly clear he does not have very much know how or experience with the Genesis library. Barely mentions anything outside the big hitters and even then only mentions the bare minimum.

I can see it both ways. He doesn't seem that well-versed with the Genesis library. He mentions Link to the Past as one of the reasons SNES is superior, but doesn't mention that there are similar games like Beyond Oasis and Crusader of Centy on Genesis. I don't recall him really mentioning any Genesis platformers outside of Sonic either.

On the flipside, Rolfe has never billed himself as a professional authoritative reviewer or game historian. He's more of a "as I remember it" type of commentator, nothing wrong with that.

Anyway, SNES vs. Genesis conversations are getting old. If anything, it should be a SNES vs. Genesis vs. TurboGrafx-16 three-way throwdown!

The problem is that the mainstream audience gets their retro game knowledge from AVGN. He comes off very much as an entertaining gaming historian type of figure in many of his videos, showing off different systems and telling about their history etc. He often presents a very incomplete picture, and some might take what he says as a fact. Turbografx-16 and PC Engine have both been mentioned once, once when he talked about "bit wars" in the Jaguar episode (he simply mentioned the name Turbografx-16) and once during the Castlevania episode (briefly mentioned Rondo of Blood and PC Engine, basically something like "I never owned one as a kid, so I'm not gonna bother talking about one of the best games in the series lol"). It's funny how Amiga is actually mentioned in his intro song, but to my knowledge he has never really mentioned it in the show, or in his "James plays" videos, though he has played a VIC-20 game and a couple of C64 games.

It might sound like I'm bashing AVGN but I'm not. Truth to be told he's one of the main reasons why I got into collecting retro games. But as soon as I started the hobby and started doing research on my own, I started feeling like he simply didn't know much about most systems libraries besides the well known games. I saw how little ground he covered in his videos. Now granted he cant mention every some what related game in every video, but a good example of what I mean is his Sega CD video. He mentioned Sonic CD and Snatcher as examples of good Sega CD games, but didn't even mention the Lunar games.

TurboGrafx was mentioned in the Street Fighter 2010 episode (he talked a bit about Fighting Street)

Playing the hell out of this game lately and I'm really enjoying it. The difficulty is balanced really well, ("Assholevania" is exactly that, those god damn death blocks...) although most of the bosses are pretty easy. It's definitely worth checking out

I love AVGN, his videos are always entertaining to me. When I saw his game available on Steam I picked it up without a second thought. I have tried all of the levels, and am ashamed to say, I have been unable to beat any of them so far. I have gotten pretty far into a couple of them, but then I run out of lives. The jokes and references are great, tons of fan service.
