Are you overly generous?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Are you overly generous?

Post by Frag Mortuus »

So, I have this issue that I don't like to say no to people. I will generally give stuff away if I'm not immediately using it and they need it.

Case in point. My In-laws are somewhat gamers. They usually buy decent gaming PCs, they own a Wii and an XB360. In the past they have given me an N64 complete with just about every good game on the system (M64, LoZ OoT & MM, etc) and so on.

Well, earlier this year they upgraded their PCs and gave me one of their old Dell XPS'. It is a Core2 Quad, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, and a standalone Radeon GPU (don't know the model or specs). Now, seeing that I'm a huge PC gamer and my PC is actually better than that, I decided to just put it in a closet until I found a use for it. Well, a good friend of mine needed a new PC because his bit the dust and couldn't afford a new one at the time. He asked if I had any parts I could lend or give him to rebuild the one he had. So, I told him he could use the one I have in my closet until he can afford a new one.

Now, he specifically said something along the lines of "are you sure? You know it may be a while before I can afford a new one. So, I may keep it quite a while." I assured him it was ok.

Well, now I'm seriously in the mood to build an awesome Hyperspin retro PC for my TV setup and now I completely regret letting him use it. He knows I want it back at some point, but I don't want to take it back for that kind of reason.

I have a history of this kind of activity. I give stuff to people and then at some point I regret giving it away. You would assume that I would learn my lesson, but I would feel terrible knowing my friend is doing without something like a PC when I have one collecting dust in a closet.

I don't know....

That's quite the conundrum.

sometimes i'm like that. there's no shame in it. just gotta be okay with having less stuff around, which is something that i've embraced over the last few years. i still have a lot of stuff but my attachment to my "things" is nowhere near as important as it once was.

i also try to tip really generously and think in terms of actual dollars instead of percentages.

Off topic:
I never really understood tipping. How come we tip at Applebee's and not at Mcdonalds? :P They certainly work as hard as each other. I can vouch for that. I really like Steve Buscemi's points in Reservoir Dogs about tipping.

At this point it comes down to wage laws. For jobs like servers which come expected with tips an employer can pay them less than minimum wage (but there's still a minimum wage for a tipping job) because it is expected that they will make up the difference in tips. So for jobs like that tipping has moved from "hey, good job" to "I'm not going to be an asshole and screw you out of money".

Seriously?

Mcdonalds workers make minimum wage at least. Servers are assumed to make tips and are paid around $2.50 an hour. If you dont tip they dont make shit

I think it's a douche bag thing to pay under minimum wage. I mean come on is $8 too much? If someone does a absolute horrible job at serving you would you still tip them?

I always wondered am I supposed to tip for takeout? I never do and now I'm wondering if thats wrong. I eat takeout alot from that place and probably would eat there considerably less if I was expected to tip.

Lol I posted about this a few days ago.

I get take-out a lot too. I tip and flirt with all the servers while I'm waiting.
