I just checked out the trailer for Outlast and it looks like it could have a very good horror atmosphere, but also looks like it might rely on jump scares. I'm going to have to at least try a demo out and see how it goes.Pulsar_t wrote:And the game I mentioned is entirely glossed over as expected![]()
With technology like the Oculus Rift there's much potential in the visceral horror element but we're ways off still.

No worries bud, that screenshot screams horror (no pun intended). Is it a PC game?Pulsar_t wrote:
Oultast seems to be garnering mostly positive reviews, and the new Amnesia is close to being released. Good times for horror fans.
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

Well, there's no demo for Outlast right now, but the game released today for only $19.99. The more I look at the screenshots and read the descriptions of it, the better it seems, especially at that price point.
Re: The slow decay of survival horror
I read somewhere that there's a planned PS4 release. A demo would have been nice.

Re: The slow decay of survival horror
I've never been a fan of survival horror and never found any of them to be terribly effective in the horror department, but I've often thought of what would make a good horror game for me.
Forgive me if this already exists somewhere, but I think a survival horror game with roguelike features would be really cool. It wouldn't be a long game of course because death would mean starting from the beginning.
You'd be in some building or city or wilderness or something, or ideally multiple settings for greater replay value, that's randomly generated. You'd pick and choose from a limited stock of starting resources, having to scrounge more along the way. It would be brutally hard so most of the fun of the game would come from making a little bit more progress each time, getting the bejesus startled out of you, and learning better strategies for staying alive.
The enemies would be terrifying since each one could mean the possibility of game over for real. There would be other things meant to frighten you and make you think you're in danger even when you're not. The atmosphere would also have to contribute a lot otherwise it would just be jump-scares.
I'm not saying this is the ideal survival horror or anything or even that this would have the slightest possibility of being a AAA game but for me this would be effective survival and horror and I think I'd get a kick out of it.

I know this isn't quite what you're looking for, but Sir, You Are Being Hunted is a survival game with some horror elements which promises a uniquely generated scenario everytime.Gunstar Green wrote: Forgive me if this already exists somewhere, but I think a survival horror game with roguelike features would be really cool. Re: The slow decay of survival horror
Just about to finish Resident Evil 6 on 360 and...yes, horror has gone completely out the window in this game. To be fair though, it's a very good action game - one of the better ones I've played this gen. No atmosphere at all though, and no sense of urgency or despair. Also, is anyone getting sick of always having a damn partner hold your hand throughout the game? In a horror game a partner absolutely kills any sense of fear or helplessness!

A survival horror roguelike is a great idea.

Bought Resident Evil: Revelations online and it will hopefully arrive in about a week - I've heard good things about this installment, so I'm looking forward to seeing if it succeeds in bringing "survival horror" back to the genre.
