If we're not counting the Classic Controllers, I guess not. They seem to be set upon being different from the competition, which is mainly using ordinary game controllers. If this past generation and glimpses of the next generation are anything to go by, it seems to be working for them. Sony have made the PS Move, will have a touch screen on the PS4 controller, and will have PS Vita/PS4 integration. These are all at least vaguely similar to what the Wii(U) offers. Microsoft have made the Kinect and Xbox Smartglass. Again, these are similar to what Nintendo offers.

Nintendo should of called it the 3DS SP. Well I guess people would still think,it could play in 3d.

Nintendo's controllers have always been 'different' though.

NES - First in with the DPAD, now most controller mimic it.
SNES - First in with Shoulder Buttons, now most controllers have them.
N64 - First in with thumb Analouge sticks, now all controller use them.
GC - Wavebird controller helped with the acceptance of wireless controllers.
Wii - Motion Controls, not first, but first to 'pull it off'.

Their earlier controllers seems 'normal' now, but they were different when they launched.

If I were interested in a new portable game system, I'd probably go for it. The only place I played my portables was at home, so the fact it doesn't fold doesn't bother me.
Current systems: Nintendo Switch and XBox 360,

Same here. The 2DS isn't a looker, but it does appearto be more comfortable. But the screens are smaller than my XL, so I'm not interested atm.

To a point, I think Nintendo is painting itself into a corner with the way they've been handling hardware.

Consider how the market has been going, with the prevalence of older games being remastered, being available via download, or simple backwards compatibility. So far, they've stuck with fairly old games for their Virtual Console.
But, think about a couple generations from now, when maybe they want to offer DS games, Wii games, and so on. If they decide to change something like the Wiimotes or dual screen setup, they'd make offering the old games more of a chore.

Better names than the 2DS

3DS Flat
3DS Smooth
3DS Retro
3DS Slim
3DS Pie
3DS Tablet
3DSq, 3DSp, 3DSv, etc. - some letter after the "S" so that it's a closely linked name

"2DS" is really dumb.

I agree that there will be confusion about finding "2DS games." I also think if parents are gonna plop down $130 for this, they may as well plop down the extra $20-$40 (depending on sales) and get a full featured system. Even if I were a kid, I'd probably not be thrilled to get the "cheap" version of the system that I want. Unless the thing is ultra durable/scratch resistant, I can't see it being a good alternative for parents to buy.

Well, the most common failure point on the DS Lite (at least) is the hinges/related. It does look like the thing has protective layer of some kind on the top screen to boot. If nothing else, it does seem like it'd be harder to break.

Man. So the white/red version is for EU only and NA gets black/red and black/blue? I am so disappointed. That white/red one looks really nice. I guess I'll wait to see if we get it before I pick these up. I'd love a Famicom version too.
