Nintendo Announces 2DS....thoughts?

Now that I've thought about this more, it seems like an inconvenient design, but not completely horrible. It reminds me of the Game Gear - unwieldy but awesome. What kind of modern handheld doesn't fit in anyone's pocket? Bah.

Tablets. That's what I feel like they were going for anyway. Younger markets are used to and fine with handheld devices that don't fit in their pockets.

The design was likely rushed. I don't think they thought about it too hard. They just needed something quick and cheap for kids to play the new Pokemon on.

Came in expecting "How would you react if..."

What I got was 2DS.

Surprising.

Anyway, I don't mind the looks of it. Its not sexy, but it isn't ugly. It does look a bit like a toy (the color scheme helps to dispel that a bit though), but I suppose for some folks that's exactly what it is.

I do think the buttons are perhaps a bit too high up, but I might change my mind if I ever get to hold one and feel the balance of it.

I typically don't use the 3d on my system either. Even with games that make use of it, like Mario 3d Land, I'll usually only turn it on long enough to complete whatever goal I need it for, then shut it off again.

I have no reason to buy one of these, since I have a 3ds and want to buy an XL at some point, but I can see the appeal.

I think the slate design makes sense from the cost-reducing end. If everything is basically connected to one circuit board, that's got to be more efficient to produce.

Besides, as has been mentioned, kids break the hinges all the time. I do think it should at least come with a cover flap though.

Looks aside (which is just weird), I might actually get one.

I want a 2DS with one screen and a sleek black look. Crap. I think that means I want a PSP.

The system doesn't fold because one of the ways they got the cost down so much was using a single LCD touchscreen for both the top and bottom. The unused portions are just covered with plastic, and the top screen has an extra layer of protective plastic on top.

It looks like this thing is made to take a beating. It's got fewer parts, matte finish, a cheap carrying case, and a significantly lower price.

Also, it wouldn't look as bad if the color schemes were different. Someone tossed up a GameBoy style mockup and it looked pretty awesome.

I understand visually and portability. It is a bit cumbersome to carry with you without have to get a special case for it. What all the media folks are saying though is that it is really comfortable to hold and not nearly as uncomfortable as the 3DS and the XL. We will see.
