Much like the Wii Mini or the 12GB PS3, it's for the more casual buyer who sees a super low price tag and makes an impulse purchase or buys one as a gift for a child. I can imagine these things selling quite good this holiday as parents are shopping, especially if it comes up in a $100 black friday deal of some kind.
That being said, I don't think it's that ugly. Looks like a taller GBA with two screens. And anybody who plays a handheld without headphones is doing it wrong anyway.
Why is it, "clearly," not for anyone like, "us?" What is with the us vs them mentality? This is nothing like the Wii Mini. The limited functionality is on the 3D only, a feature that excluded some people and, from the opinions of many people who own the system, don't really care about. The 3D isn't a selling point for the system. With the Wii Mini, you lose real features like backwards compatibility and online functionality. You do not lose that with the 2DS.
I was generalizing of course. It's just a way to sell the same games on hardware with a smaller pricetag.

It isn't?
Was it ever? Other than the initial reveal and "Oh wow, glasses free 3D handheld!" most people bought it play Nintendo games, like people usually do when it comes to their hardware.

What's wrong with the prices of 3DS games? Their pricing is fine.
Google Play and Steam/GOG/etc offer competitive pricing. The 3DS isn't a platform with such privileges. I mean sure, if a game cost millions to make it wouldn't make sense to charge $20 for it, but plenty of 3DS games are simply overpriced.
Nintendo need to create unified accounts with your purchases tied to it. Just do it already! I think it's pretty ugly myself, and quite large, reminds me of a bathroom tile.
The 3D was never a selling point for me, but I do like it. Looks amazing in Liberation Maiden and most sprite-based games. Looking forward to 3D Ace Combat sometime.
Now that I've thought about this more, it seems like an inconvenient design, but not completely horrible. It reminds me of the Game Gear - unwieldy but awesome. What kind of modern handheld doesn't fit in anyone's pocket? Bah.
The monoaural speaker will be a step down, but I don't think anyone will find it annoying. I sure didn't mind hearing GBA games in mono.
I wonder how it will feel to hold the system by the top in one hand and use the touch screen with the other? That's rather odd.
My best friend may end up buying one of these, since he's nearly blind in one eye. It'll be between this and the 3DS XL for him. If he chooses the 2DS, I'll be sure to give it a try. I might end up eating my words.
