Oh, I see now. With Batman, Bruce Wayne is the mask and Batman is the real man. Clark Kent has no excuse, though.
Clark Kent's excuse was he was raised by farmers.

Sometimes I don't know if I buy the idea that he is really Batman, and not Bruce Wayne. It's a cool idea, but the truth is...he is both

If he was really Batman and only Batman, he would be a revenge obsessed character with no issues about killing. Bruce Wayne is his human side, it keeps him connected to people and the real world. Batman NEEDS Bruce Wayne

And Bruce Wayne needs Batman, otherwise he would have no purpose. It's just two sides of the same man. Most human beings wear many "masks". No one is really only one single personality. It depends where you are and who you are interacting with.

One of my favorite multi-personality characters on TV right now is Walter White/Heisenberg

Except he'd have to care about something in his civilian life if that were true.

Can you think of anything that Bruce really cares about that isn't a part of his Batman life? Alfred and Dick Grayson? Except they're both parts of his Batman life. His parents? Their deaths is what drove him to be Batman. His company? Not really, he has other people run it and just uses his income from it to fund his Batman life. Vicki Vale may have been, at one point, but she's long ago history, now. And his recent loves (Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Talia Al Ghul) are completely involved in his Bat-life. And his only real friend outside of Dick and Alfred, is Commisioner Gordon.

A lot of writers have shown that he cares about his company, its reputation, and what it does. That's his family's legacy, which is very much a Bruce Wayne thing.

I think he sees Gordon as a father figure too, which again, is the Bruce Wayne part of him, not the dark avenger. He cares about Gordon

It's all subjective though and Batman is a character than can be different based on who is writing him

Again, Movies and Comics are different.

Movie Bruce Wayne ("You wanna get nuts? C'mon. Let's get nuts! aside) is boring as watching dog poop turn white. He is a playboy and nothing more.

The issue with Begins and Rises is that the movie focuses on the dull, drab Wayne. People watch a Batman movie to see Batman.

If you ignore all the "God damn Batman" years Bruce Wayne was very important to how Batman worked.

Part of Batman Beyond was about Bruce getting his company back and getting it back on track to carry on his family's legacy and do good for Gotham.

Bruce Wayne constantly did good as a civilian in ways if he was just Batman he never could. Donations, helping people with jobs or a new lease on life, rebuilding run down places of Gotham.

Also, he has been pretty suave from time to time. Part of the act is dumbing down Bruce, making him seem a little naive. But when the moment comes he can sweep a woman off her feet.

In the movies I wish they would of fleshed this out more with Keaton. But we only got a glimmer. I will agree the rest kinda sucked as Bruce that has always been my biggest complaint, very one dimensional acting and writing.

Bruce does just as much to better Gotham as Batman does.
Batman removes crime - Bruce cleans up after crime and helps those affected by it.

They actually focused on that when they started the New 52. Batman decided to try and help Gotham more as Bruce Wayne. He was actually using his money to build and fix parts of Gotham and giving speeches. They mirrored his story a bit with Nightwing too, who was trying to create an Amusement Park in Gotham using his circus connections as Dick Grayson as a way to take away some of Gotham's darkness and give the people something to smile about.

Both of them made a real effort to help Gotham as people, rather than super heroes. There was a cool Batgirl story too where she was trying to protect Bruce Wayne, who became a target for some villain because he was putting himself out in the public eye so much

Let's focus on the good: Bryan Cranston will be playing Lex Luthor.

Okay, I'll give you guys philanthropy as a Bruce Wayne thing. But does that one aspect really make him more Bruce than Batman? Personal obsession, training, friendships, romantic relationships, personal friendships (JLA), and other such things that should be happening in his normal life, seem to happen more in his superhero identity. That seems to me that he's much more involved in his life as Batman than he is as Bruce Wayne.

And just to clarify, since it was brought up, I'm talking about comic Batman.
