Back on topic, OP mentioned a cave, which makes me think of Gravitron or Solar Jetman. These are not shmups, but they are games with spaceships in caves, and you do shoot.

Hey, OP, what system was this on?
IIRC, he said it was something he played at an arcade.

I don't mine the snipehunt in this case, it's fun to look through obscure shmups and be reminded of a few you've forgotten. I just fired up mame to play some Side Arms Hyper Dyne.

Edit: What about Thunder Cross? It's a cousin to Gradius but with lettered item drops.

Shmups are serious business. No time for jokes

Oh wait, that snipehunter thing.

Anyways, I'm not going to give up. I'm liking the Name That Game threads that have been popping up lately, but I still can't believe I couldn't identify Night Stocker on that last thread we had.

I wish the OP would have some more information for us.

Try this, oddly enough DocHauser had this in his obscure shmup thread. For your consideration -

Turtle Ship

Image

- Horizontal
- 1988
- Static lettered power ups
- First stage is cave
- Shield has blue glow to ship (and it also has a timer as seen in the picture)

I guess Turtle Ship wasn't the right answer either. How about...

Damn, talk about a needle in a haystack. There's a lot of shmups out there.

Did it have Vertical stages too? If so, it would explain why you are having a hard time finding it.

Try this one though. It matches your description fairly well (besides the vert stages).
Terra Force (1987)

Here's a youtube video (skip the 1st 2 1/2 minutes to see the hori level)
...just another lost soul...

I like this one, if only because it's probably the closest we're gonna get, and only because it's a Nihon Bussan shmup I have to try
