*New* Dragon's Crown - Vita
Boy, I went back and forth on this one. I loved it for the first half of the game and was calling it one of my 2013 games of the year. Then when the second half of the game opened up I got so frustrated because the game's difficulty goes up so damn much and you have to grind random dungeons and side quests until you get strong enough (and find enough higher level AI partners) to even have a change against the game's second batch of bosses. Ugh, I hate forced grinding, and leveling up and getting new skills is such a slow process in this game. It's clear that the developers wanted to control the difficulty. It's very hard to quickly gain a bunch of levels and power your way through the game
So the game was pissing me off for a while and I did a ranty post in the thread going for this game, but I did finish it and I do still think it's a great game. It's an impressive fusion of genres. It's a beat 'em up, but it's also very, very much an rpg. I mean, every rpg trope is here. You can have a party, you have shops, you have equipment, side quests, treasure chests, NPCs, a town, dungeons, etc. It's probably the best example I have ever seen of a beat 'em up/rpg fusion as it scratches every itch for fans of both genres.
As a beat 'em up, everything is here. The combat system is great, lots of combos and a huge difference in play styles for each character. You take for granted something like throws as just a common thing in beat 'em ups, but in Dragon's Crown only one class can do them. Throughout the game, you'll see various familiar beat 'em up conventions. You scroll from left to right and kill stuff. You can ride animals like in Golden Axe. You will find lots of food items. You will have elevator style levels where you can send enemies plummeting to their doom. You'll pick up various weapons to attack people with. You've got four player co-op, and the game is even better than others because you can use AI controlled characters to accompany you if you can't get people to play with. And at the end of every stage, you'll face off against some super powerful boss
Some of the bosses are ridiculously hard and frustrating, but also impressive. They are not all just hack and slash away at big enemy while also fighting off minions. There are a lot of difference design elements at play in each boss battle. Plus, some of them are, quite simply put, epic. One dragon battle in particular leaves quite an impression
Overall, it's a great game - just gets a bit too tough in the second half IMO, but it's not unbeatable if you have the patience to do some grinding, or are willing to spend a fortune on repeat continues when you lose all your lives, or just get a group of players to help you. Shit gets real in the second half of the game.
The game looks gorgeous, and sounds amazing. It gives you bang for your buck too. Not only did I unlock a hard mode where my character and stuff carries over, but the game is even cool enough to give you a story reason for hard mode. It's also cool to know that my high level AI partners, gold, and rare items can be used by my other classes, who will have an edge despite starting the game at level 1. The game is stellar on Vita. There's some frame rate issues, but they never hurt the game much for me as they don't happen often enough to be annoying. Also, the game uses the touch screen in so many smart and seamless ways it feels like the Vita, not the PS3, was the system the game was designed for. I can't imagine playing it now without touch screen controls.
